My cousin lives in the Centennial Park group and has for years. They are plenty dumbed down believe me, from interbreeding. My cousin married the old fart (3rd wife) when she was 16. Most people I know think polygamy when they think Mormon. Growing up, I was always asked how many moms I had.
The LDS Church has attempted to educate non-members that it no longer practices polygamy. It sends out missionaries to teach people, it spends tons of money in "we are normal" media campaigns.
But shows like "Big Love" and "Polygamy, USA" reinforce the misconception the LDS Church wants so desperately to root out.
For most Americans (and perhaps others too) being a Mormon means being a polygamist.
These small fundamentalist groups have been more successful in portraying their versions of Mormonism than has the alleged 15 million strong LDS Church.
