Back in the old days when polygamy was being practiced but Mormons were hiding it from the feds, and when occasional "blood atonement" victims would show up dead in the street, there was what was called the "Mormon Creed." It was preached from the pulpit and taught to the members.
When I was a kid, the church had a big internal campaign based around the slogan, "Dare to be different!" They meant to be different from the rest of the world, but I liked the slogan because I felt out of place within the church. I wanted to be different from other Mormons. "Dare to be different? Okay!"
Kimball liked this one. I think he had a plaque on his desk with "his slogan." The problem was that the shoe company Nike had already trademarked the phrase so as far as I remember. Or maybe it was a Gary Gilmore, the Mormon murderer, coined the phrase. I'm not sure. Either way I think a famous or infamous Mormon came up with it.
