Recent author/scholar excommunication?

My sister-in-law told me that my TBM brother was very upset earlier this year when one of his favorite Mormon authors or scholars was excommunicated. Does anyone know who this might have been? I'd love to find something that could perhaps help pry the door open for my brother to start questioning. Thanks.

I beleive he was exed for being critical of church leaders. He also claims to have had visions of angels maybe even of Jesus (the second comforter).
