I experienced severe scrupulosity as a missionary and am now tapped into the burgeoning community of RM's w/ the same affliction (some active LDS, some ex-Mo, many confused and bitter about their experience).

I will post a link for my complete story very soon (it describes my experiences in the Church, mission, and journey out of Mormonism).

Most importantly, I have a young friend right now who is suffering. He returned from his mission recently and is working with a psychiatrist who, by his report, doesn't seem to care about his OCD/scrupulosity. He was seeing an LDS therapist previously who was also little to no help. He wants to find someone else who can help him work through his problems--someone who will be empathetic to his condition. I advised him to seek a non-Mormon therapist or psychiatrist and he agrees.

Any recommendations for someone who fits this bill in the Phoenix, AZ area?

One of my favorite companions had severe scrupulosity and suffered for over a year before the MP finally stopped telling him to suck it up and realized he needed help.

I'll ask around for any therapists who may have experience with this.

I'm curious as someone who has seen firsthand how bad this can get, did the scrupulosity go away when you left the church?

jimbofisher,

Yes, leaving the Church has helped enormously. I am not religious (no evidence in support of any faith tradition, as far as I'm concerned)--I'm not sure how going from Mormonism to another religious tradition would impact scrupulosity (Mormonism is pretty strict and shame based, so it's particularly destructive).

I'll post a link today on this thread with my story.

How's your friend today?

One last bump, I want to give this kid as many options as possible if you folks can give me any more recommendations. Thanks.
