Me and my sister are resigning. We both sent our letter through email- my sister got a response that said she will be contacted by her bishop (even though it was clearly stated not to have any contact). I have got no confirmation as of yet.

I know that once they acknowledge they got your letter, you're legally out, but how can you tell when you're name is off the records for good? Will our names be on their records if we refuse the bishop visit?

I really want to do this with minimal contact. Is the only way to make sure you're out is when you get the letter from church headquarters?

Telephone the Confidential Records office in Salt Lake City and ask. Be prepared to give your full name and birth date.

It's like the Stoic club. Once you go, you always have a reservation...

If you have a letter that provides a dated confirmation
of resignation, you are out. Whether they keep you on
the rolls is their problem.

They don't get to define the process. It's the law.

And here's nothing magic about pieces of paper they may have
that might pretend you're a member.

Your letter of resignation IS your resignation.

Their confirmation of receipt is the end of the process.
If they disagree, they're wrong. See case law.

Thanks I will keep that number!
And I suppose my main concern is I have a tbm dad who WILL give out personal info to any bishop that asks for it. And, hey, you're still on the member records, so you're a mormon is his attitude. So that's why I have to be certain my name is off.

Congrats on your resignation!

Also, it's possible that Member Locator Services may still try to find you by contacting your TBM family members. When I was a TBM, I regularly got calls demanding info about my siblings who had resigned. (I never gave it out. Blood is thicker than baptismal water.) And in 18 months that I've been out, my former stake pres has called my grandma and some of my TBM cousins. I recommend that you have a serious talk with your TBM family in case they get any calls about you and your sister.

Wow, I didn't think they would still look for info on resigned members!
I am planning on letting tbms know that if they give my personal info out to missionaries/bishops/ ect then I will not give them my personal phone number or addresses any more

you'll get a letter from Membership Records saying quite plainly that you are no longer a member. KEEP THAT LETTER! I still take my letter out and re-read it fondly from time to time.

Congratulations on your resignation. Just hang in there. The letter WILL show up.

Congratulations! How long did it take after you sent your email? Was your sister contacted by a bishop?
