To paraphrase my lord Raptor Jesus, if Mormon God doesn't like getting mocked, why didn't he think of that before filling his religion with so much ass-clownery?
Just saying:"God will not be mocked" in a Stearn voice really isn't cutting it. His credibility had really gone down in my book. Come on, Elo, back those words up, fry the internet or something! Whuss!
For someone who warns he shall not be mocked, he puts up with a lot of it.
God is like the French Army, standing firm on the Maginot line, while the German armies, representing mocking, tear apart his flank and wear, as he sits ideally in helplessness.
Or a kid who talks about how is football team is going to win, and the other side isn't even going to score, right before they lose in the largest defeat in sports history.
"The church has, and always will be attacked. Todays LDS church is attacked just like the Savior during his time on earth, and the apostles after him. It's when the world accepts us, is when I'll worry."
Yeah I am sure that's why Mormons are mocked. It has nothing to do with their "Holier than thou" attitudes and wacky beliefs and murky history and brainwashed mannerisms and door-to-door proselyting and... on and on.
Yeah, but again, his exact words are, "he SHALL not be mocked." Shall is a word I didn't understand in church. It means it can not be allowed. Not in, he will eventually will punish it. It means, he will strike the mocker down, where he stands, with chain lightning, and a hammer. The fact that he never does, shows the whole threat is one big lie.
The writer says how his point isn't to lobby for victim status. It isn't? Of course it is, and Mormons are so damned good at it...they're professional victims of persecution.
I have Mainstream Christian friends who pull this bullshit on facebook, too.
I want to scream and shake them and say YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL! Everyone gets picked on. Watch shows like The Daily Show, Tosh.0, South Park, etc and you'll see MOST religions get bashed. The only thing this author is actually seeing is confirmation bias. They want to see something so they do, but they gloss over everything that contradicts their hypothesis.
Because earnest young people in suits and white shirts or knee-length skirts with tops that cover their shoulders are so out-of-place among youth in general?
Because we "can't" smoke or do snuff, get drunk or stoned, drink espresso or frappuccinos, go home with the attractive stranger of our choice from the bar, or hang out in casinos dropping dollar after dollar down the drain, we never have any fun?
Because we believe God still speaks to us, wants to speak to us, and loves us enough to speak to us just as He did to people thousands of years ago?
Because we actually look forward to being with our families for eternity?
Because we don't throw tanrrums, riot, assassinate, or burn things down someone offends us?
Because we are just so completely... well... mockable?
The list could go on and on and on."
Jesus. And they wonder why people mock them! So much self-satisfaction and pride. So many stupid assumptions about other people. Right there in the comments their arrogance and disdain for those who aren't in the flock is striking.
Yeah, I wonder why more people aren't lining up to be one of you.
It's what gives them their persecution complex. The thing is, everybody gets mocked especially on those Comedy Central shows because at times, they've done things to deserve it. Mormonism has a lot of things that make them easy to mock, from regulation underwear, to the bastardized Masonic temple ceremonies, and that everyone has to dress in the same color when they take family pictures. Many of their family pictures could be featured on Awkward Family Photos, even if their last name isn't Romney.
Being backed into the corner on so many issues, they are collectively smarting and have to rally members behind a cause, as weak as it is. I wonder how many members read this and say, "Oh, brother. Here it comes again," and then just leave the church. I doubt that the end effect is anything but negative.
Because of this annoying little thing most countries have nowadays called "freedom of speech."
BTW, Mormons habitually refer to all other religions as "the whore of all the Earth." So you'd think they wouldn't make so much of a fuss when other folks returned the favor.
Seriously, though, most religions are fair game for media and whatnot.
The fact that this "article" got published makes me think most of Utah is seriously deluded. It's not even close to factual- it's just what the author wants to see.
Remember what JS said about other religions in his First Vision? Since nobody really knows if there was one, two, three, of 40 First Visions, it doesn't matter. But what he said about other religions (supposedly directly from his walkie talkie to God) is that all other other churches are abominations, that their professors are corrupt. Now that TSCC is back-peddling as fast as they possibly can to look mainstream Christian, they are not going to make waves with other religions because that might call attn to the First Vision crap and what it says about other religions. That and the fact that TSCC continually changes its doctrine. It is laughable! Other religions don't do that nearly as often if at all. No matter how weird Scientology is, it is a take it or leave it thing. They don't change it to please more people or to look better. They don't care how stupid they look. They do stick to their stupidness though.
Mockery is a useful tool against the prideful, self-important people of the world.
It helps the delusional to see themselves through the eyes of normal folks, much akin to the Knight of Mirrors in the Broadway musical of Man of La Mancha.
As an ex-Mormon, I still own my prior beliefs, and I will talk about them as I please. Part of my recovery process was through pointing a finger and laughing at the things that I used to hold in such high regard until they no longer had any sway over me.
And now it's just fun.
On top of all of this, there's a question of what the church considers mockery or persecution. Quoting their own prophets to them is persecution. Retelling embarrassing moments in church history to them is mockery. If it doesn't promote the faith it's anathema.
But they don't get to define the terms for outsiders. They don't get to assert that they are without reproach without rebuttal and they may respond in kind.
Mockery may not be polite discourse, but it has its value.
"Hey, God? It's me, Moses. Will you come out of the bathroom, please? Look, I know all those mean kids teased your diorama, but all your guests are here and everything's super awkward right now."
"..."
"It's a really nice diorama, God. I like the golden angels you put on top. That was a real nice touch. And so what if some people don't like your magic stones or mystical amulets or cursed treasure guarded by ghosts? Dungeons and Dragons isn't for everyone."
"..."
"And who cares if the underwear didn't turn out quite as nice as you would have liked it? It's not as if most people will even see how awful they look!"
"Fuck you, Moses! Go away."
"Look, I wasn't going to tell you this, but Pharaoh just showed up with the rest of the football team. No one's told them what's going on yet, so you could still save some face if you came out and put on some tunes."
"..."
"God? You still there?"
"I'll be out in a minute. Just let me freshen up."

Islam seems like it gets a free pass due to its nature of violent retribution. I'm referring to situations like 200+ deaths resulting from a Danish newspaper printing of Mohammad cartoons, or assassinations of US citizens because someone posted a Koran-burning video on youtube.
It's a double-standard how the media has no problem mocking most religions, but walks on eggshells when it comes to Islam.

It's also because they hear what they want to hear.
I can't believe that "article" got published because there are no facts there. There's nothing to report. The author heard a joke on a television show and lost his mind over it.
He claims that Mormons are the only group that still gets picked on. Please. He just doesn't hear it when other groups are picked on.
The real truth, the truth Mormons don't want to hear, is that they AREN'T joked about that much more because NOBODY CARES ABOUT MORMONS. Outside of Utah, nobody knows much or cares much about them. Finding a random joke squirreled away in an episode of the Simpsons just fed into this belief that they have that other people think about Mormons all the time.
THANKS Eric - "Oh I don't mock Mormons but I do mock TSSC. Big difference." - this has been my main point on several posts. IT IS NOT THE PEOPLE IT IS TSCC.
Raptor - YES I DO think it is funny. I think almost everything you say is funny. You really ought to be a stand up ex-Mo one man show. You could make a fortune. LOL LOL LOL and then some.

Frankly, all the active Mormons I know thrive on all this alleged persecution. Gives the "usual suspects" something to prattle on about at their Fast and Cry meetings. Brother and Sister Cries-a-lot (their last name does start with "C") are "frequent criers" during Open Mike Sundays at DW's ward. They see persecution in everything.
One Sunday, Brother Cries-a-lot gushed on about how someone at work saw another guy in a white shirt and tie and said, "Hey, Bob, can I join your church?... snicker... snicker." DW wasn't paying attention, but I got a snort out of it, because Brother Cries-a-lot was all dramatic and indignant. Maybe I just like to mock Brother Cries-a-lot because he always calls me "Tony," when that isn't my name.
Mormons LOVE anything they can call persecution... drama queens, every last testimonkey-bearing one of 'em!
