In my stake conference a couple weeks ago (yes, I attended! lol) they even used initials for our stake presidency and high counselors! Are they just trying to make themselves feel like GAs? Or does the church tell them to do it?

Obert Clark Tanner does.

Pretentiousness. Nothing more, nothing less.

Or, it might be that I might confuse Thomas R Monson and Thomas T Monson, and not get the right guy. If you leave out the initial, then your testimony is less powerful, less twoo.

Someone told me once that Mormons started using their middle names when polygamy was at it's height. The polygamous child would be given the mother's maiden name as a way of telling which child belonged to which plural wife.

I don't know if that's true, but it kinda makes sense.

It's just another layer of ass kissing that Mormons have to go through. You are a big deal in the church when you get to start using your middle initial.

I personally refuse to use it now. I will never use the full name like Thomas S. Monson or Boyd K. Packer, as I feel like I am actually validating their authority by so doing.

Sometimes I'll hear a name like H. VarDell Crandall, and I'll wonder what the first name was that was awful enough to prefer VarDell.

LDS folks tended to have the same name, also. We'd never keep them straight without the middle initial.

It's funny, the RLDS/CoC GA's tend to do it as well. President Becky L. Savage of the First Presidency, Apostle Bunda C. Chibwe of the Quorum of the Twelve, etc.

I still want to know if peyote was used when Elder Cree-L Kofford was named.
