There was a segment on the basketball situation at BYU and it seems like the national media's attitude is "Well, good for BYU for making athletes live up to what they promised but what dumb things to include in the honor code." Diane seemed surprised at some of what was included and by surprised I mean, she seemed to think it was ridiculous. What seemed to be positive wasn't that BYU lives by a so-called "higher standard" but that they stuck to their guns, no matter how ridiculous the guns are.

Would that be a fair assessment of the situation or am I reading more into it?

College sports are allegedly amateur status. However, there's lot of money going around outside the amateur athletes... and so naturally there's a lot of conflict of interest.

It's not uncommon for colleges "to look the other way" if a player's indiscretion will cause his/her absence and hit the college negatively in the pocketbook. In this case, BYU didn't bend it rules to accommodate their sports revenue stream and/or exposure.

That was a convoluted way of answering "yes" to your question. They stuck to their guns without regard to the perceived moral values.

The question no one in the media is asking is...

How did BYU find out about the sex lives of 2 of their students?

If they would focus on HOW BYU finds out this info...I bet there would be lots more indignation from the media

I agree....ask how BYU found out about these two. And then the media will see what a tattletale society Mormonism is.

I agree w/Diane Sawyer's tone/take on the whole thing. I think athletes need to be held to the same standards as the other students...but having sex with his girlfriend...huh?

Outside of the cult, this kind of punishment for a 19 yo is insane. I hope Brandon Davies is not mormon and is able to move on and someday laugh about how he played basketball for a cult.

Morning Joe asked with his Starbucks in his hand, "Can I still drink coffee and root for them?"

Kind of like the GA's , living by the light and knowledge of their higher "meat" as opposed to truth and sticking to that meat, no matter how distateful ( ridiculous) it becomes in the face of the complete lack of evidence. In fact in spite of the evidence.
