Regarding "To name RfM as a site to avoid would only encourage the curious who've never heard of us to come check it out."
Yes. Rather like GC talks: "Don't look at PORN! Stay away from PORN! Avoid PORN!" So, what stays in your mind? --I believe that this is deliberate, in order to create shame, which makes members easier to control.
In contrast, leaders really DON'T want members reading any Internet site which shows TRUE Mormon history, doctrine, and practices! So they avoid naming specific sites.
Of course they will never mention this site by name. They know that if they mentioned it by name that many people that didn't know of its existence would find it.
They tend to stick with a generic "stay away from 'anti' sites".
This only makes them appear dishonest when one learns information on their own.
They already have listed it, although the person talking about it certainly came from a different background; she used to be Baptist or something. This was around the time that Boyd K Packer had his fan page and was getting rabid, bigoted comments in his support. She gave a devotional to about 100 people on how to become better propagandists on the internet. She listed this site and said, among other things, that the church was hemmorraging members, (sp?), that interest is quickly being extinguished among investigators, and she also listed the kinds of things that people on this board say, the most vivid of which I can remember, was that Joseph Smith is a FRAUD! Lol. She also told the entire audience what others think of Mormons-that they are bigots, brainwashed, and about 4 other things. That's the point where she failed to elaborate any further. And I left shortly after that. Just another example of the church trying to use propaganda to further its agenda. In my opinion, it will push some out, but also turn others into even worse Morgbots.
Last year, I was on a computer where the server had blocked it as a hate-site. I complained to the server, and it was unblocked. This may have been a residual from the days when the board had more rabidly anti-Mormon posters.
The public computer was at a governmentally-run agency.
Admitting that RfM exists would be a disaster. Reminds me of a true story:
I had an admin assistant back in the day that had a ruler on her desk upon which she'd written: "DO NOT REMOVE FROM VICKI'S DESK". It prompted everyone to take it off her desk at least 3x per week. :)
Members are told to stay away from Anti-Mormon material. Anti-Mormon material is anything that doesn't promote belief in the Mormonism (the SLC centered version of it). I had been asked in a temple recommend interview at one time if I associated with anyone who was anti-Mormon. I don't believe the question was that direct. Perhaps it was if I associated with anyone critical of TSCC.
hasn't really devoted its vast financial resources to pushing this site way down on the google searches. Despite everything, RFM still shows up solidly on the first page of a google search for 'mormon'.
