Whenever I hear anyone say that the U.S. constitution is based on Judeo-Christian values, I can't remain silent.

Last time I checked, there is nothing in the constitution about prohibiting people from worshiping other Gods besides the Abrahamic one. In fact, the 1st amendment guarantees the right to do just that.

There is nothing in the constitution about prohibiting people from making idols, or stoning people to death for taking God's name in vain. In fact, free speech guarantees the right to do just that.

There is nothing in the constitution about prohibiting people from working on the sabbath.

Stealing and lying are a little redundant, because they both have to do with honesty. Being honest along with not murdering people are the only 2 things that the 10 commandments and U.S. laws have in common. However, these are not values exclusive to Abrahamic religions. These are universal values.

The commandments exclusive to Judeo-Christianity seem to be absent from our secular laws.

There is nothing prohibiting people from being envious of our neighbor, in fact the government encourages it because it is perceived as being good for the economy.

So next time someone says that the U.S. based its laws on the Bible, or the 10 commandments, or "Judeo-Christian values", kindly remind them that if that were really the case, the laws would look more like Iran, Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

And the only mention of religion is to limit its use as a test for government office and to prohibit government from interferring with religious practices.

There are only two or possibly three of the 10 Commandments that are in agreement with current US laws - the prohibition against killing and stealing.

I've shown people like my father that there is no mention of God anywhere in the Constitution, and he'll go on to quote from the Declaration of Independence, apparently unaware that they are different documents.

How comical that he confuses the two documents. It's also commical that he thinks Jefferson meant his version of the Mormon/Christian God (even though Mormonism hadn't been invented yet) when referring to 'our creator'.

I think Jefferson's use of the term "creator" was intentionally vague to be inclusive to all beliefs - not just to Christianity. He was certainly familiar with common usage and references to God, and I believe that he would have been more specific about this reference if he had intended his meaning to be more narrowly interpreted. Jefferson was a forward thinking sort of man and he was often critical of religion - as were many other of the Founding Fathers. He wrote the document to appeal to all men regardless of their beliefs and not only to Bible thumping Christians. To interpret the phrase otherwise, imo, is to be arrogantly self-serving for one's personal beliefs.

You might also want to point out to him that the Declaration of Independence doesn't actually give any rights either. It was written before the U.S. was a country... with the express purpose of giving England a hearty eff you.

All it says is: We're not subjects of the English royal crown anymore. Have a nice day. Buy some tea before you head back across the pond!

The U.S. Constitution was written by Jesus and then dictated to the founding fathers. And the angel Mormon helped the vote to ratify become absolute.

Afterwards, corrupt politicians began to move away from Jesus's perfect constitution by abolising slavery and allowing women to vote.

And the constitution is still being corrupted today when socialists want to allow gays to be married.

Jesus is not happy with what has happened to his constitution and will turn all of us into salt if we don't "return to the constitution."

Ten Commandments of Solon (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers, 1.60), which run as follows:
1. Trust good character more than promises.
2. Do not speak falsely.
3. Do good things.
4. Do not be hasty in making friends, but do not abandon them once made.
5. Learn to obey before you command.
6. When giving advice, do not recommend what is most pleasing, but what is most useful.
7. Make reason your supreme commander.
8. Do not associate with people who do bad things.
9. Honor the gods.
10. Have regard for your parents.

Solon was born, we believe, around 638 B.C.E., and lived until approximately 558, but the date in his life of greatest importance to us is the year he was elected to create a constitution for Athens, 594 B.C.E.

an easy way I use to remember the 10 c's is
3 selfish
4 not
3 law

the first three are all about a jealous and insecure god

the 4 'not law' are nice, but redundant in todays society
honour the sabbath - in a 24/7 society, it ain't gonna happen
honour your mother and father - bit redundant...Depends if they are worthy of honour
dont envy the neighbours - try telling that to the marketing department
dont commit adultery - comes from a time when women were chattel. if you dont want your wife to commit adultery, you treat her with love and respect.... and vice-versa

the only three that exist in law - in all countries - are
dont steal
dont murder
dont bare false witness

they existed before moses (they were already enshrined in the code of Hammurabi - which predates the 10 c's)

The commandments about stealing and lying are positive prohibitions. The Constitution does absolutely nothing to prohibit private action. It is purely a restriction on government action. Although prohibitions on stealing and lying are not CONTRARY to the constitution, they are also not CONSISTENT with it, either. Generally only statutes make similar prohibitions, but that's not constitutional law. I think that takes care of all the ten commandments as being irrelevant to the Constitution.

The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth

by Anton Szandor LaVey ©1967

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.

2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.

3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.

4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.

5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.

6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.

7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.

8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.

9. Do not harm little children.

10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.

11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

These appear to be less silly than the christer ten commandments

SURE the Bible is the basis for the US Constitution - inso as far as it (the constitution) is correctly translated.

:)

Above smiley indicates that this is an attempt at humor, don't need to fly out here and harm me.

Most TBMs get their constitutional lessons out of mo scripture.

D&C 77:80 And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.

So if the founding fathers were raised up to the very purpose of making the constitution, they sure forgot to mention god in it.

In fact, they made statements quite to the contrary:

"[R]eligion and Government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together."
-James Madison (principal writer of the US Constitution)

"Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."
-Thomas Jefferson (principal writer of the bill of rights)

"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it"
-John Adams

"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."
- Benjamin Franklin

Let's then applaud MoJehsus for finding such stalward, would-be Mo's to write the constitution in his image. Yep. Way to go Jeezus!
