Came across a discussion from a young (mid 20s) man complaining about the VS posters in the mall in SLC. He thinks they should be taken down because the are too much a temptation for men. He called is "soft porn". He said he was with a couple of female friends who took him into the store, and he was "very uncomfortable".

Ok, how ridiculus. Here's my view:
1- Why'd you go into the store if it makes you uncomfortable?
2- Are you gay? Not that there's anything wrong with that. What man feels uncomfortable around pictures of half-naked women?
3- For most men, it's not "too much of a temptation". If it is for you, then there are professional counselors who can help you with this addiction.
4- And are you really serious in calling this "soft porn"? Playboy is soft porn, and those women are naked.
5- Finally, why would a company not advertise what it sells? VS sells bras and lingerie, and their whole business model is sexy stuff. So their advertisements should cover their women up?

You asked:

"What man feels uncomfortable around pictures of half-naked women?"

A man filled with self-righteous indignation who is flaunting his phoney Mormon morality! IMO, it is people like that who have the filthiest thoughts racing around in their puny little minds.

I remember in the early 90's there were some billboards of one of the Ute's star gymnasts strking a typical balance-beam pose in her Ute uniform. They were taken down very quickly because someone complained that they were too suggestive. I think these kind of comments are more indicative of what's going on in the complainer's mind than of the pictures themselves.

What next, make them wear burkas?

Why can't these men regulate their thoughts? If they see some chocolate in a shop without its wrapper on do they have to run and eat it?

New here this is my first post, been lurking around for a bit but I will give my back story later. This one made me laugh and had me remembering my advertising class at Ricks well back when it was Ricks. We did a whole story board for and advertisement using Lingerie. Man did we get a bunch of self righteous looks from everyone in class including the professor. Well part of the grade at the end of the semester was based on who's proposal was the most memorable. Well guess who took that especially from all the self righteous males in class. That whole situations still makes me laugh

I agree that this guy probably has bigger issues. The ones most outspoken about pornography probably have a pornography problem. And I think the reason they want these things taken down is that they feel like if they can't have it, nobody else should.

Actually, it was my wife that got all upset about this guy and really wanted to fry his ass for his posts.

I told her that she should tell him that the church has come out with a new line of garments which VS will have exclusive rights to, and will be very sexy. The phrase "every knee shall bow" will have to be changed to "every groin shall bow", however, since the mark gets changed from the knee to up in the panties. What to do about the naval mark? Hmmmm ... maybe include it as part of a piercing? Just an idea.

I've learned to embrace my filthy thoughts and turn them to action when Mrs Truthseeker is willing to accept my company.

The other day, DH and I were watching a Kathryn Heigl movie and I commented on the link someone posted here a couple months back of Kathryn in nothing but panties, arms crossed over her chest and how gorgeous I thought she looked. It really was a fantastic picture - I wish I had ever looked that good once.

And then DH embraced his filthy thoughts and the rest of the afternoon was a lot more fun than watching a boring movie.

She's not bad for a mormon girl, even though she's on record saying she wants to become fully active again at some point in the future, which is about as sexy as a wet weekend in Skegness - the Brits out there will appreciate that.

Gee, my 13 yr old loves the ones on tv....If I looked like that Ijust might go around in those myself. But alas, I don't nor have I ever looked like that.

What, he doesn't want to be seen with flashlight in his pocket?

He's only complaining about it because he's uncomfortable with the perfectly NORMAL thoughts that pop into his head when he looks at them. They have nothing to do with porn. They are pictures of women, ALONE, modeling the clothing.

On the same subject, I remember my TBM aunt being all kinds of scandalized when her daughter was working at Victoria's Secret. She wasn't modeling, she was WORKING there, and she thought it was wrong. Christ, people need to lighten up.

If men are such weak-willed, wimpy creatures who cannot control themselves at the sight of a bit of skin, and then ever so conveniently blame the woman for "tempting" them, then why in the sam bloody hell would God- scuse me, HF- put men in charge of everything?

HF must really, REALLY loathe women.

Good book: "The Nine Parts of Desire, the Hidden World of Islamic Women" (doubly penetrating to me, read it in Iraq).

I came out of the book AND the country newly persuaded that Mormonism is just a more secularly-countered form of the misogynist tradition.

I think it boils down to the thought-is-sin paranoia, and male-jealousy-driven "morality". Thus the need for thought-police, ie, all the many things censured lest it cause you to have that instant form of sin: oops, thinking about a sin.

Worst case is the purely jealous superstition that a man's lust for a woman defiles HER! So in a cruel travesty, Sharia thinking claims to PROTECT women (from themselves) by covering them from the defile-laser eyes of men.

and I think everyone should. You make very good points. However, I had to stop take a break from reading it about 2/3rds of the way through because it was just so heart-wrenchingly awful to read about the lives of women in these situations. Even DH, who rarely tries to tell me what to do, told me to put it down because I was sooo depressed. I finally finished it but it would be interesting to go back and compare it to Mormonism and other similar belief systems. Just see where these man-made religions can lead.

Maybe that's a common Mormon term for them. Interestingly though, my mom loves VS bras and panties. My dad, though, really couldn't care less what she wore.

Soft porn, huh? is it the supermodel bodies and poses, or the underwear? If it's the undies, so flipping through a sears catalog or walking through the granny underwear section at a local store is potentially exposing yourself to soft porn? Because lord knows that would lead to wet dreams of all sorts *snort*

If its the models, better only surround yourself with people you find highly unattractive... better safe than sorry, you know--(rolls eyes). And the beautiful women can head toward partners who appreciate them. and appreciate them. and appreciate them ;P

I would be deeply concerned about men who didn't like being turned on.

I saw that stupid report on channel 13 news the other night, some silly woman complaining about the VS windows in the mall in Provo (figures).

Stay home and wash your garments then.

Mormon women are just jealous because they don't get to wear that stuff. Mormon men are jealous because their wives don't get to wear that stuff.

Taking my woman on a spree to VS for Xmas. It's a win-win for sure. =)

where the woman was so disturbed that one can buy - and view - foundation garments (I'm talking basic bras and undies, not sexy stuff) on Amazon, that she decided her son would never use the computer. Ever. As long as that smut was on innocent sites like Amazon, the computer would open up a world of impurity for her kid.

There was a thread on that Babycenter board after Thanksgiving about the VS bra ad that was on a building during the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, and the OP was offended by it.

I would have asked him what he was tempted to do that was just almost too much for him to overcome. That comment would have totally creeped me out.

What a jerk.

IMO, sexy underwear, like swim suits, keeps a woman more conscientious about keeping in shape. Women like to IMAGINE they look like the air-brushed, aneorexic "angels." Heck yeah, it's good advertising.

I feel more powerful, more real, more myself in that underwear. Humans are sexual beings, after all.

I wonder if most Mormon men are afraid of sexy women. Really, I think their own insecurity is the reasons they force their wives to wear ugly men's underwear.

They're afraid of letting a woman own her own sexuality, so they say stuff to play on our fears, such as saying immodest clothing will get a woman raped, or that displaying ads of a woman in her bra and panties is "too much of a temptation," as though somehow a woman is responsible for the choices of someone else.
