I was born into the church and I haven't been there since I was 11 years old. I am currently 33.

It doesn't matter were I move to, they always find me. About a year ago, I heard a knock at my door and saw a creepy man in a suit standing there. I said nothing and he knocked louder and said in a SWAT voice "Mormomn Church!".. I was like WTF?!?!?! I continued to ignore him and he walked around the building and attempted to peer into my windows. Thankfully, I was on the second floor at the time.

I have since moved. It was all quiet until ...

The other day, I got a very hard knock on my door. I couldn't see who was there, so I opened it a crack, making sure to bar the door with my foot. The woman said she was from the Mormon Church, blah blah blah.

I politely informed her that I have not been to church since I was 11 and I am not interested in returning. I also told her that I wished my family would quit giving my address to them.

She got offended and said she would tell the local church that I no longer wanted visits and suggested that I send a letter to Salt Lake. She also said she was sure any new person would not know of my desire to be left alone and I would only be tracked down again.

Track me down? Excuse me?

It's unnerving.

I have friends who haven't been to church since 1962 and they still have regular home teachers. They have no intention of going back.

that is one thing about the church that REALLY rubs me the wrong way (along with a million other things). If someone wants to leave, you let them leave. that, to me, is more of what makes them a cult than anything else.

If they get really annoying, tell them that if anyone comes to your property uninvited on church business you'll contact the authorities.

I just can't believe the gall these people have. There have been plenty of other times but these 2 incidents stick out. Come to think of it, I don't recall anyone attempting to visit me when I lived in the gay neighborhood of my city. Maybe I should move back there! =D

It will stop the Tracking" process dead in its tracks.

Here are two examples, one email and one written.

Email your resignation form. It works and is faster and easier. Here is someone’s Template for resignation via email with web site instructions for email conformation. Save all correspondence, print it and keep it in a safe!

Name and Membership Number (member ship number is not required to resign, it just helps them find you faster)

Mailing address
Birthdate

Mr. Dodge,
“ This letter is my formal resignation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it is effective immediately. I request NO CONTACT about the matter from local leaders. After today, the only contact I want from the church is a single letter of confirmation to let me know that I am no longer listed as a member of the church.
Thank You.”

Send it with a return receipt program from http://www.didtheyreadit.com so you'll know exactly when it's opened and read. Keep a record of your “opened mail conformation”.

Send your resignation to dodgegw@ldschurch.org

That’s all it takes for email resignation.

Here is a written template:

Your name
Birthday
address

Member Records Division, LDS Church
50 E North Temple Rm 1372
SLC UT 84150-5310

This letter is my formal resignation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it is effective immediately. I hereby withdraw my consent to being treated as a member and I withdraw my consent to being subject to church rules, policies, beliefs and 'discipline'. As I am no longer a member, I want my name permanently and completely removed from the membership rolls of the church.

I resign according to legal precedents established in Guinn V the Church of Christ of Collinsville and Norman Hancock Lawsuit against the LDS Church. The LDS church shall exercise due diligence in carrying out this procedure. I hereby notify you that you have 90 days, far more than enough time to provide written confirmation of my voluntary removal from the LDS church. Delays beyond this may result in my engaging legal counsel to pursue other options.

We are required to list on the form "reason for leaving", please indicate "at member's request as he is not a believer." I insist that my records show the only reason my name has been removed is that I requested it to be so, and insist the word excommunication or any other derogatory word not be used as there is no basis.

I have given this matter considerable thought. I understand what you consider the 'seriousness' and the 'consequences' of my actions. I am aware that the church handbook says that my resignation "cancels the effects of baptism and confirmation, withdraws the priesthood held by a male member and revokes temple blessings" I also understand that I will be "readmitted to the church by baptism only after a thorough interview". (quotes from the current Church Handbook of Instructions)

My resignation should be processed immediately, without any 'waiting periods'. I am not going to be dissuaded and I am not going to change my mind.

I expect this matter to be handled promptly, with respect and with full confidentiality.

After today, the only contact I want from the church is a single letter of confirmation to let me know that I am no longer listed as a member of the church.

Sincerely

your name (notarized if possible but not necessary)

Enjoy.
