My grandfather was a stake president back before the church became the stone cut out of the mountain and the fastest growing church in all of Camelot.

This meant that all of the general authorities who visited usually stayed with the stake presidents and their families. Tithing hadn't quite gotten to the point where the authorities could jet wherever and stay at a Marriott for free with all the paid pornography your television can handle.

My grandmother talked often about the different authorities who stayed, and she would speak of them with awe.

Except for one.

Bruce R. McConkie's very name makes her squirm. She doesn't swear and will go out of her way to never say anything bad about ANY church leader. But the memory of Bruce R. McConkie's staying at her house gives her the fits.

Her mouth says, "he wasn't the most pleasant of gentlemen who stayed." But her body language and the tone screams her true feelings of, "Fuck that asshole. Seriously, he was a douche."

Wow, I idolized the guy as a missionary, what with that thick Mormon Doctrine book and voice that beamed out that he was so damn smart and was there to tell everyone just how it is.

Why did your grandmother not like the guy? Any details?

She easily gushed over every other apostle or prophet. But him she'd just squirm, say something cryptic but perjorative, and then change the subject.

To deb, if you read McConkie's "Mormon Doctrine" book you'll be shocked to your foundation. He was an apostle that documented some of the craziest of Mormon beliefs. Try to find the earlier editions that explain that black people were black because they weren't good people before they were born.

He was the son in law to profit Joseph Fielding Smith.

He was unique because he really seemed to believe he was an apostle and wasn't afraid to go out on limbs about his views on things. He is highly quoted among mormons.

He comes across as arrogant, and I have met his son who is not very nice, Joseph Fielding McConkie, so I've wondered if he got it from his dad.

It's common he is a gaping rectum of platitudes and certainty-the only true General Authority who ever lived.

Unfortunately, the milk of human kindness didn't run in his veins, but we all know that's secondary in importance for an apostle in TSCC.

So a lots of the higher ups that were/are looked up to were really "jerks", it sounds like.
