I came into NYC to see the Book of Mormon on Broadway and saw it last night. 8 of us in our party, 4 exmos, 3 of us are RM's. 4 of the group are diehard theater goers that are very critical of broadway and they LOVED it and are planning their next time.
This show is the hottest ticket on Broadway and I was told this is sold out for several months at this point.
IT IS A MUST SEE!!!!!!
It certainly poked fun at mormonism and it's mythology including it's history and culture. It essentially followed 2 newby missionaries dropped in Uganda not really equipped to deal with the natives "real" problems. One of them was a typical clean cut pollyanna go getter (Elder Price) and his companion, a naive, overweight follower prone to lying to encourage people to like him (Elder Cunningham)
There were 2 scenes (musical numbers) that were especially good for me. One of them featured a song called "I believe" which Elder Price was telling about all the crazy stuff he believed.... he will become a god, own his own planet, garden of eden in missouri, current revelation (1978 reference)..
The other scene was the VERY best... a Mormon Hell Dream... This was a "SouthPark" creation at it's best. All the things that mormons have nightmares about because they are not good enough, including dancing starbucks coffee cups... It was hilarious!!! (in fact, i'm laughing now as i remember it)
BUT there really was a very good message in the end.. That just as current day mormons have a contentment and good lives based on the shananigans of joseph smith, this small group of native Africans can have good lives and contentment based on the lies of Elder Cunningham.. (he tells the story of mormonism intertwining pieces of star wars, the triology, etc, creating a crazy mythology that is really not that much different from what mormons believe.
I did see a 30 something couple get up and leave at the point where Elder Price was having a book of mormon removed from his..... let's just say places unmentionable....
It is worth a trip to NYC!!!
