Moroni rode it out of Meso-America while carrying the gold plates. The poor creature died in Southern Utah so Moroni had to walk the rest of the way to New York. See the map of Moroni's travel at this link:

The true story was in the kinderhook plates but Joseph Smith was killed before he could finish the translation.
