It took me too long to figure out that your frustration is over the companies that sell these kits and your mother's gullibility in buying them, not with being reasonably prepared.

My mom is so similar. I've thrown away so much wasted food from her storage room. It's frustrating. She spends so much money on overpriced preparedness stuff that her friends at work are constantly selling. Yes, I think these companies prey on the nod-your-head-and-say-yes mo's.

As anagrammy pointed out, so many of these premade kits from mormon companies don't neccessarily include the best items for the individuals needs.

So much better to make your own kits, but alas, our mothers just waste their money. It's their money to spend, but that doesn't resolve the frustration.
