The funny thing is, I actually picked it up from being an Anne Rice fan. She has always addressed her fans collectively this way as far back as I can remember.
Oh dear, sometimes I don't make sense!!! Obviously I meant I am a fan of Anne Rice but not a big enough fan to know she uses the word "guys" a lot. I'm sure you got what I meant jeesh!
My highly-educated wife uses the word that way, and my intelligent and assertive daughter does as well. I will honor their preferences long before I'll defer to an old man's judgment.
If my usage has offended any woman on this board, you have my sincere apologies. As for men, well, I do not in this instance care.
A good example is the foul bastardization and misuse by French explorers of the Native American word for "woman." Once that became known here in Arizona, the name of both a freeway and a mountain were officially changed.

It will ALWAYS be Squaw Peak to me. Just like the drunken wagon-burner at the bus stop asking me for fifty cents will always be an injun, not a Dine. ;)
Its just a game for some people, the arguing/discussing. Who ever has the best and apparently the most information against anothers opinion wins. Everyone plays 'cards'. If someone says they feel sad or offended, they are obviously 'playing the victim card'. Feelings and opinions have no place for these people who play this imaginary game/competition. Only themselves because they know it all. Some how brings to mind the term arrogant. huh.
This is silly. Instead of dying i will go bake cookies. I love cookies, dont u? :)
