Utah 2nd in per capita mental illness. I'm guessing it's likely due to depression from all the guilt heaped on them by LDS, Inc.

My husband was arguing, not 2 minutes ago, that it's because Mormons are better at getting help for their mental illness - because of the services the church provides. I said bs, that in another study, Utah only ranked average at getting help for it's citizens for their mental health needs. I also pointed out that Mormons are probably less likely to get help for their mental illnesses because the church makes you feel like you feel bad because you are sinning or not doing all you should. So going for help equates to being a failure. But he's sure that their are high numbers of people in Utah reporting their mental illness because the church helps it's sick and needy. Ugh!

After my mission I got married in the temple, to a girl I didn't know other than from when we were children at church. Everyone around us was encouraging, even saying they were getting revelation that we were a match......god seemed to have excluded me from that little tid-bit of info, because I really felt like I didn't know what I was doing and what I was doing was just going along with it.

She ends up being mean, violent and abusive, physically, verbally and emotionally. I was in hell and my family knew it! The same ones that got the message from god that it was all good. My temple wife was most likely bi-polar, if not manic deppressive. She refused any real help.

During a particularly bad period at the beginning of the marriage, I was telling my dad just how bad things really were. He looks me straight in the eyes and says......"do you think she might have a demon"?

I looked straight back and said, "no, I don't think she has a demon, I think she is mentally ill and needs help and/or medication". All he offered was a blessing....couldn't think of, or even fathom anything helping beyond god/church.

Well, I divorced her years ago and am happily married to a never-mo. In the years since my leaving her, my ex has been suicidal many times, abused more men after I left her, had several DUI's, has had her license suspended, starts drinking in the morning, attacked me in my own home, destroying property and injuring me as I threw her out of the house (literally), done a few weekends in jail, and was issued a no contact order by the judge so she can't have anything to do with me for about 99 years. THANK YOU!

And all mormons can do is offer their magic as a solution.....the only solution! Demon my ass! What an idiot....yes, my dad. It's stuff like this that has left me with no respect for him now that he's gone. He led a shallow life with his head up his religious ass, not enjoying anything, always trying to be a sacrifice for his church...thanks Kolobians....you too Pops!

I wonder if epilepsy counts as mental illness...

Masturbation counts as mental illness - at least there are a lot of parents frantically getting "help" for their sicko teenage sons. Of course, the fact the parents think it's a mental illness shows that they aren't particularly well so ...

Ha! I'll bet if you eliminate the masturbation/pornography therapy cases, it drops to about 2%.

wrong answer JAMES!!! here ya go:

Utah was the most depressed state. Among adults in Utah, 10.14 percent experienced a depressive episode in the past year and 14.58 percent experienced serious psychological distress. Among adolescents in Utah, 10.14 experienced a major depressive episode in the past year. Individuals in Utah reported having on average 3.27 poor mental health days in the past 30 days.

should not be considered a mental illness. It has physical causes, and it can be treated with medication and surgery. Many people experience seizures after head injuries, and the elderly can also develop seizure disorders. Mrs. Schweizerkind, a successful educator (now retired) has dealt with the disorder since childhood.

That was my line of thinking. I'm just wondering what they use to qualify "mental illness." I would imagine that treatment for epilepsy would not be included.

Epilepsy is as much a mental illness as getting a tumor is.

It is a circular problem one in which they create the problem or need so that they can ride in on their white horse and offer a solution. If everything worked they way they wanted it to then members would not need the LDS Inc. anymore. It seems that everything is built around a series of "Almost's" it isn't something you can ever obtain in this life but you can almost make it.

a woman who was VERY mentally ill--and slightly intellectually disabled. All her friends and neighbors were telling her that she just needed to make sure she went to church every Sunday, etc. Since I had dealt with suicidal depression, I told her that she needed help. She actually ended up in the mental health ward and then in a psychiatric facility for a while and had electroshock therapy.

It is a real STIGMA in Utah to acknowledge to anyone that you take antidepressants. I have a friend who is just about to leave on her second couples' mission and she was SOOOO depressed on the first mission, she lost 50 pounds and begged her husband to please take her home. She takes an antidepressant and can barely get off the bed. BUT she has the "perfect" mormon life--her kids are all VERY SUCCESSFUL and all temple married--competing with each other to have the most kids--and she is ALWAYS depressed.

Perhaps I am reading it wrong, but the NHMA appears to have Utah at No. 51. North Dakota at No. 1.

"South Dakota was the healthiest state with respect to depression status."

Utah is the most depressed and South Dakota is the least depressed.
