Tomorrow's edition of The Economist, one of the best news magazines in the English language, includes a short article claiming that yes, Mormons are christians.

http://www.economist.com/node/21534563

It is worth mentioning that The Economist does not favour any religion over any other. Indeed, most contributors are probably atheists.

Also notice the link to a 1973 article on blacks and the mormon cult.

Your thoughts?

Of course they're christian. They're just not "like mainstream christians."

But mainstream christians base their version of what's christian on interpretation just like kolobians do.

That's the problem with the "I'm a mormon" campaigns. They're not trying to say they're christian. They're trying to say they're "just like mainstream christians."

I admit this is the most mormon-friendly article I've ever read in their paper (or site), but they're still not entirely supportive of the cult.

In an earlier report, they described it as a "comically conservative sect" or something like that.

"Mormons have always professed their faith to be christian" , at the end of the article. That sentence alone shows that the writer is unfamiliar with mormon history. You can read in "Theachings of the prophet Joseph Smith" what the prophet himself thought of the christian faith, All the christians will go to hell is what he said. Christian ministers are in the employment of Satan himself according to the temple cermony pre 1990. Why do they want to be christians now suddenly? Mormons used to be proud they were a new religion. Where is their pride and faith in Joseph? Why change a trade mark?

In the US Christianity becomes the flavor of the month for a lot of people durring an election cycle. If Bhudism were the mainstreams flavor of the month you can bet you would see the MORG bustin out with all the meditation quotes they could find in an effort to show how well aligned they are with Bhuidist practices.

to "two bald men fighting over a comb" and I concur. There's arguments to be made for both sides, but really it's just a distraction from bigger issues neither side is prepared to confront.

Now we are supposed to believe exactly what they are paid to say.
