My TBM father-in-law put Net Nanny on my eighteen year-old brother-in-law's brand new laptop. He was sneaky about it, and told my brother-in-law his computer needed some software updates. Well, when he got it back he couldn't access any websites that were not church related. Just another attempt by my controlling father-in-law to make sure his adult children are on the straight, and narrow. I wasn't even surprised when I heard about it. I let him fix my computer ONCE, and he set my homepage to LDS.ORG! This man is a nightmare. He is so worried about everyone else's impure thoughts that he can't even govern his own. Why is this behavior considered to be acceptable? People who act like this need to take care of their own morality issues before they start meddling with other people.

At least, I hope he doesn't. :)

Did he manage to get his computer back to normal? I'd be furious.

If it's brand new it shouldn't have much for him to even worry about backing up.

No, my FIL is an evil computer genius. He is hoping that this drastic measure will hold out long enough for my brother-in-law to go on his mission. I am sure that he will fall in line, and just accept it. He likes having daddy pay for everything, and wouldn't want to jeopardize that. This is why my FIL gets away with his BS.

He is a rabid Repubican. You cannot talk any sense to this man. He's 'Fred Phelps' kind of crazy.

no faith in forgiveness or learning from our own mistakes no faith at all.

So follow Satan's plan and force everyone to follow the rules.

And that's how I know Mormons don't believe in God.

No discussion. No trust. No "free agency."

My guess is that the father in law has a stash of porn himself.

program, or do it himself. If he has a job, he can pay someone to do it correctly.
Then he needs to keep his laptop away from anyone who will mess with it.
Best way to do that is to have it password protected.

I told my bro in law that. He's already starting to say that it ain't so bad. See? I knew that he'd have time to think about what being non-compliant with my crazy father in law really means (no more gravy train). Oy vey!

My brother in law payed for it with money he actually earned. I don't understand why he has no balls. It's irritating.

Then tell him that his dad will have more respect for him if he sticks up for himself. It's time.

that appears to be NetNanny (or one of the others), shows only "wholesome" site histories, etc. and appears to be functioning as intended--but doesn't. It would sell in Utah. I can't help but think someone has already done it :p

Tell BIL to google "linux usb". He can use his system to access non-"approved" sites that way. He can also just wipe the f#@king OS and install linux on it. I'll bet your FIL would have a little bit harder time crippling it then.

Your FIL needs someone to put some arsenic in his postum.

1. Buy a 4GB flash drive at Walmart for $8.
2. Use this tool to make it into a bootable Linux drive.

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Boot in Linux. You have now bypassed any installed security measures and are running your own self-contained operating system.

Most computers are any key f9 through f12 to access the boot menu.

Meh, I'm just putting up a proxy host on my gateway FW linked to a cloud web filter. That way I know exactly what is going in and out of the network and I can block it if I want.

My kids are still young but I have no concerns about telling them to get their own internet connection if they want to surf porn and waste their life away on World of Warcraft.
