Hi! I'm a first time poster and a nevermo. I was wondering if you all could help explain why there are often Mormon missionaries in my college's computer lab. It is Goucher College in Baltimore, for those who might know the area.

I don't want to engage them, so I haven't asked them directly. It's just weird. I don't know that it's closed to the public, but we need a user ID to log on to use the computers. I almost did have to confront them one day because the computer lab was full and I had school stuff to do, but then a computer opened up.

Thanks!

Weird. Perhaps there is a mormon who is a faculty or staff member giving them access. For fun, call campus police and tell them there are weird cult members who are obviously NOT campus employees or students screwing with the computers and that their presence makes you feel uncomfortable and unsafe, and you don't want to have to report to your parents that the school allows these wierdos on campus.

You don't want them there doing if they don't have official business. Get them kicked out.

You might want to ask a college official. I would think the students should have top priority.

Hope they're not harassing with unwanted religious confrontations? I would think if that's happening, someone needs to contact campus security.

If you have time, we'd love to know how this turns out. Good luck.

Then usher them off campus with a hefty fine. They're probably also parking their cars without paying proper fees.

Just tell their Mission President that they were using the University's computers to access this site! You'll see them vanish like the golden plates.

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, I'm a nontraditional student, so I'm significantly older than most of my classmates. I asked one other student, and he told me that he's not sure why they are there, but he thinks their "homebase" (his words, I guess he means ward) is really close by.

I'm not sure how to proceed. I don't know that I'm offended by their presence as much as I find the whole thing weird. I haven't seem them talk to or proselytize anyone so far. I've tried to sneak a peek at their computers when I've been in the computer lab. It seems that some might be doing personal stuff, but it's hard to snoop without being obvious. They seem to come once a week or so.

It wouldn't be so obvious if there was just one of them, but they tend to come in a group of 6-8. When there's a bunch young guys in white shirts, ties, and name tags, it's pretty clear who doesn't belong. I think that surely the staff must notice them.

Are they not allowed to use computers during their mission? Or could they being doing some sort of "mission business?" (Either way, I think it's inappropriate to use a college campus's computer lab.) And if they do need to use the computer as part of their mission duties, why can't the church purchase a couple for them. It's not like computers are hard to come by these days.

Why don't they go to the public library that's really close? I'm pretty sure anyone with a Maryland library card can use one. And it's the Baltimore area--there's not shortage of

I think maybe I'll strike up a conversation with one of them the next time I'm in a position to do so. At the very least, I want to make sure they understand that it's just not cool to be hogging computers for several hours during peak times of the day. Especially with finals approaching! Surely college-age people should get that. I also want to know how they log in. Is it a faculty member? Or have they struck an agreement that as long as they keep to themselves, they are allowed to be there?

I'll let you know what I find out next time I see them around. I think another issue I have, especially after reading about the missionaries in Texas, is that I don't think the college should be supporting the church's so-called missionary efforts in any way.

That said, I'm sure their life must suck as a missionary, based on what I've read here and other places. I feel bad that they were born into this whacked-out situation, but that doesn't mean I need to support it, however inadvertently, with my tuition money.

"The Office of Public Safety has received several complaints about members of a religious group who have been proselytizing on campus. They do not have permission to be on the college grounds and have been asked to leave on several occasions."

At least it would be interesting to know if the Mishies are the proselytizing religious group that is refusing to accept the college's invitations to stay the hell off campus.

How much do you pay for tuition there? How much are the computer hogging Mormon missionaries paying?

That would be interesting to find out. Thanks for the information. There are a number of Jehovah's Witnesses who actively proselytize in the area. I'm not sure if they are known for going around college campuses, but they sure as heck come to my neighborhood all the time!

When I was a missionary in Baltimore, we always went to Towson. Lots of good looking ladies up there that just loved us Mormon Boys. Damn, I kinda miss that campus.

They get one day a week to write home to their families. It's called Preparation Day or P day for short. My guess is that a faculty member is high up in the church and is granting them access. I think they strategically placed them there as well in hopes that a curious conversation would start up in lab and maybe meet their quota. My cousin is on his mission and I get his emails...his entire mission goal in Iowa is 500 for the year...so watch out!

You should engage them in conversation sometime...they are very young and timid. Say something like..Elder so and so...Elder that's quite a title how do you go about getting that? It might make you laugh and lighten up your day.

Goucher College in Towson? I'm quite familiar with the area having grown up in nearby Harford County. The local LDS Ward building is in fact just a short distance north at the intersection of Dulaney Valley Road and Pot Spring Road. And the missionaries probably like the college because they can talk to a lot of people quickly. Missionaries are taught to use "effective" ways of finding and contacting people and to limit their usage of "ineffective" methods.

I know the building your are refering to. When I was there we lived in Cockeysville. The former bishop there was a real douche.
