It's been a while since I've been here so when I visited here today and looked up my screen name and saw Cheryl's post at

I knew I needed to respond. As blindmag points out, there are a number of ways that you can learn to read the computer screen if you are losing your sight. Which way you choose is dependent on 1) whether your access is through Microsoft or Apple and 2) personal preference.

As I pointed out to blindmag a while back (quite a while back, if memory serves), there are both state government and private organizations that deal directly with blindness issues. Two of the largest U.S.-based blind consumer organizations are the American Council of the Blind (ACB) with its national website at

http://www.acb.org

and the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) with its website available at

http://www.nfb.org

. While I was a member of the NFB during the 1980s, I am now a member of the ACB.

If you would like any personal advice or need any assistance, please feel free to email me at

tchittenden@cox.net

, and I will be happy to help if I can. My first name, by the way, is Ted, should you decide to contact me via email.

I do appreciate your expertise.

I've had two cornea transplants and three other eye surgeries this year. There have been spans of time when I haven't been able to see much except color and light. I thought about you a time or two and wondered how you managed.

At this point my distance eye is doing quite well and I'm able to drive.

In mid-February I'll go back to the specialist for a full evaluation and I'm hoping I'll be able to have glasses which will make it possible to read actual books again.

I have often thought I'd certainly need physical therapy and possibly a dog if my problems were to be more longstanding or permanent. But hopefully I'll have a good outcome in only a couple more months.

Again, thank you for your good efforts. I've always enjoyed your posts and I'm glad you stopped in.

Take care, Ted.

All the best to you Cheryl and hope this new yr. brings forth all you hope for. My mom is also having some serious eye problems-no surgery though. And a good high school friend just had surgery for a cancer in her eye. Hers is a long and uncertain recovery but doing okay right now.
