Mormonism absolutely DEMANDS that mormons have a mortal enemy.
Whether it be Catholics, Missourians, The US Government, gays, intellectuals, feminists or REAL historians and scientists, the mormon church hasn't been able to function for long without defining an "enemy" from amongst people who largely don't care whether the so-called church lives or dies.
This serves a couple functions.
Any misfortune and/or setbacks are blamed on the enemy du jour.
And the time and attention of mormon church members can be focused and directed outward at the supposed enemies, rather than maybe turning inward toward the absurdities of mormon doctrine, or the authoritarian inflexibility of the church itself.
