Was I the only one who thought this was claim. Even at my most TBM, I was secretly looking at porn on the internet, and have never once paid for it. But you always heard these stupid stories about how anonymous guys destroyed their marriages and finances by racking up these huge porn debts.

Are Mormons simply the only people stupid to pay for something that everyone else gets for free, or was this just another faith promoting lie?

Gosh, one would think that the living water provided by the LDS Gospel could fill that void...

Something is wrong with the supposed internet porn "epidemic" and sexually repressive organizations like the Mormon church. It seems nearly every time I speak to my TBM father or friend they bring up the evils of these horrible internet porn addictions. Same claims of marriages destroyed etc. Why is that I've NEVER of these issues from others? Only Mormons and maybe the occasional evangelical? They create their own problems...

Good question, and I have to agree - if you are paying for porn on the intertubes, you are doing it wrong. Not that I would know.

My wife and I have a friend who was LDS and her husband was as well. He started viewing porn and then took it to a whole new level by getting strippers and then hookers right off the street.

The good news is after that the wife was looking for help in dealing with his addiction and found out the Morg was not true. So in this case yes porn ruined his marrage, standing the Morg and his wife left the fold.

I'm not saying that this happens to everyone but I do think Mormonism causes something in the brain that wants to rebell and it helps jump start addictions and in some cases helps propel them to the next left.

As a morgbot, because it was viewed as evil and destructive, I was tempted to view porn all the time. Now as a ex-mo x3 years, I could take it or leave it. I am not "tempted" because I know I can look at it at anytime w/o guilt. I hardly ever look at it. A 60 year old friend of mine at work gets a Playboy subscription for X-mas every year as a present from his wife (he's Jewish by the way), and he give's his mags to me, and I don't even look at them. My wife looks at them for the articles (at least I hope that's why she looks at them..hmmmn come to think of it, she seems to be dykin' it up a bit, with the leather chaps and short butch cut..naa). Anyway, the point is, porn is good for me, because I'm losing my mojo, and to keep the wife happy I look at it occassionally to keep the T-levels up. I ain't addictied.

Well, I claim that members are losing thosands of dollars because they give ALL OF THEIR F'ing MONEY TO A CULT addiction call the The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Nut Cases. Mormons are by far, the biggest dumb asses ever to grace this planet. I should know, I was one of them, but I'm not dumb anymore.

They did a study on internet porn in Utah County and found that the area has one of the highest rates of paid internet porn subscriptions in the country, BUT, that the numbers of people viewing porn in any medium were average and normal compared to the rest of the country. They concluded that because of conservative religious reasons and fear of public shame, many people don't buy porn in public. They do it in the privacy (and secrecy) of their own homes.

Porn "debt"? People really go into debt over porn? That's a new one to me. I wonder, too, if this claim is an exaggerated fear tactic.

It is kind of funny though that people would pay to look at porn when it is gratuitously free nearly everywhere on the internet. Yes, I have looked :p

but maybe "honestly" paying for it is how they justify watching it? That's my theory anyway. Or they are just too novice to understand that you can get it for free?

The mormons are discriminating viewers of porn.
Sure you can get it for free, but you have to pay for hi-rez.

Look harder, you can get free hi-def porn too on the internet. Just got to know where to look.

"The mormons are discriminating viewers of porn."

Very true.

I don't see how porn could ruin a marriage unless it became obsessive. If, instead of turning it into a heinous wrong to be afraid of, why should a couple not casually watch it together once in a while?

I think this is a lot like how my family thinks I'm an alcoholic because I drink wine AT ALL. They have all or nothing thinking. They have no idea that two glasses of wine a night is moderate.

It's the same with porn. It doesn't have to be a fifth of whiskey a day; it can be a wine cooler now and then. (Although, blecch. Not a fan of those.)

Agreed...the problem is that I don't think the word "moderation" exists in the mormon dictionary. They just have NO CONCEPT of how to enjoy life. It must be black or white, evil or good. I'm pretty sure they don't believe in "grey"

Through careful research, I have found that there is plenty of "Playboy-type" porn that is free on the internet. It seems to me that most of the paid-for porn involves fetishes and raw, explicit sex acts. Just saying...

I'm reading this thread and seeing that the posters are missing where someone could spend thousands of dollars on internet porn.

I can tell you how, but to be called stupid is not going to help anyone.

I've spent thousands upon thousands over the last 10 plus years. All this time I was compensating for my lack of social interaction resulting from my inactivity from the mormon world.

I'm not offended. I just think every poster on here has their heads up their asses if they can't comprehend how someone like me could waste year after year paying for internet porn(internet strippers more specifically), real strippers, prostitutes, strippers who double as prostitutes in VIP....

Really, should I explain everything to you? Use your imagination and maybe stop calling everything stupid.

Oh, and I know where to find free porn. It doesn't stop me from spending money with internet strippers.

I see, but you probably have the money to spend on that, and if not, it would be more of a part of a sexual addiction then of an porn one. I am also assuming it is not as much money as you would be wasting on the church.

That's an interesting point you make. I decided not to make a distinction between paying someone to share the internet masturbation experience with me as opposed to paying to watch porn videos.

Maybe the church is noticing that less people are paying tithing and they have to blame it on something.

I think... they're thinking/worried that $ should be coming to Them instead.

Maybe it's garment porn. I'm sure you would have to pay someone a LOT of money if they can turn you on while wearing garments.

I hope that some talented actress someday gives it a try. Or better yet, two talented porn actresses, with talent just falling out of their Jesus jammies. It would be worth seeing.

The actual headline should say "Church losing thousands of dollars to internet addictions".

A year or so ago there was a story about how Utah leads the nation in per-capita subscriptions to pay porn sites. And, interestingly, it wasn't just that Utah was at the top, it was way ahead of second place.

The joke then was that "honest Mormons pay for their porn sites instead of stealing it."

I have a friend who used to work at the Salt Lake Library where it is against library rules to look at porn on the public computers. This friend told me that the ones they have problems with are usually in a suit and tie--married guys who can't watch it at home.

I live in the heart of the Bible belt. A buddy of mine is an upper manager at the local cable system and he said our town, which is extremely conservative (top 5 in the nation) has the highest rate of 'adult channel' subscriptions in the entire cable system. The system doesn't cover Utah, though, so the rate can't compare to what Orem's must be.
