JS-self proclaimed prophet

Wasn't this the way it went down? No one else bestowed that title onto him, did they? He just claimed it for himself?

Lots of people have claimed they were prophets, the messiah etc since his time. How come none of these other people gained traction? Was Joseph Smith just one heck of a conman? Was it the money that others who fell for him thought they'd get, like Witmer, Cowdrey etc?
