Robin,

I changed the survey so you can choose more than one. I realize it is more than one thing for many.

1 Do you identify yourself as an Exmo? Yes

2 Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years? Yes

3 What was the main reason you became an Exmo?
History and Doctrine

4 Who/what has helped/supported you the most in
becoming an Exmo? My husband and sister, then my brothers

5 Is the Mormon Church a cult? (yes or no and why)
Lets see, it has its own scriptures, it has a leader
that is the only one who is allowed to have revelations
everything that comes from the prophet is doctrine without
question. Then there is the matter of keeping members so
involved that they don't have real time to question anything.
It is very controling. So yea its a cult.

6 Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo?
mormonism has cured me of religion
7 Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person
currently in the mormon church? (still alive)
Thomas S. Monson
8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead)
Joe Smith and Brigham Young
9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church?
The thing that is the most misguided is also the thing people stay for. Its using your family as hostage if you don't conform to their beliefs. The whole if you cross us God will take away your family in the next life.

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years?
I don't know I just keep informing people of what I know and so far I have 4 out of 5 brothers and sisters that have left the church. Hopefully fewer than now.

1. Yes
2. Yes 3 and counting
3. That's easy, A. History, without a doubt.
4. This board, a couple close friends and my brother.
5. Yes, even though it makes me uneasy to use that word, I have to admit it does exhibit an awful lot of cult-like behavior.
6. No, finding out the church is a fraud turned me off on organized religion as a whole. Also, I'm not sure if I even believe in god now.
7. I don't know, but Oaks and BKP have said some things that have really troubled me.
8. I'd say JS and BY.
9. There are so many but I think the most damaging, at least in my own experience, are the attitudes towards sex, marriage and homosexuality.
10. Fewer, I think the church is in decline and will continue that way...let's hope.

1. Yes, but still closeted.

2. No

3. f. - modern practices of the Church (it isn't what it claims to be)

4. The internet, with sites like this one helping more than others.

5. Yes in the broad sense. It's not just that it's a cult, but that it's a cult in the form of a powerful corporation.

6. No, I'm basically agnostic right now.

7. I'm not sure who that would be, but I think as time goes on Bednar will become the epitome of everything wrong and evil with the Morg and its leaders. Based on age and succession he's almost guaranteed to be prophet someday.

8. The leaders who directed the transformation of TSCC from a provincial religion to a correlated, mind-controlling corporation. So N. Eldon Tanner, Prez Lee, Benson, Hinkley, etc.

9. I don't think there's one bad policy, but many things related to temple sealings (the controlling one year wait policy, the contemporary practice of celestial polygamy, not allowing women a temple divorce, quid pro quo nature of tithing, etc.) are pretty evil. But lumped together, all policies that rob individuals of their livelihoods (2 year mission rite of passages, discouraging women from education and careers, etc.) are evil.

10. Nominally there will be more, but I expect growth rates to decrease.

1. Do you identify yourself as an Exmo?

Yes, in most circles. I work along the morridor with a lot of mormons, so I have to be careful what I say. I know of people who have been fired in my position for being too anti. One day, someone at my work is going to say, "hey, you told me you went on a mission, but so-and-so says you're an atheist. Which is it?" Me, "both", and walk off.

2. Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years?

Three years for realz, about 20 years in my heart.

3. What was the main reason you became an Exmo? (choose the main one but can choose more if necessary)
a. History -- Yes
b. Doctrine -- Yes
c. Current leaders (Bishop, SP, etc.) -- Not really.
d. Sin -- Not then, although, I do plenty of "sinning" now and love it.
e. Offended -- No, although most mormons are offensive
f. none of the above

4. Who/what has helped/supported you the most in becoming an Exmo?

This website, individual research, and a supportive wife and kids.

5. Is the Mormon Church a cult? (yes or no and why)

No doubt about it. They control your belielf, make you pay, lie to their people, control relationships, control information, control clothing, control activities, control diet, control language, control thought, control behavior. In a word, CONTROL.

6. Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo? Why did you did you not join another church?

No, I am atheist. I hate joining groups because they seem like a little reincarnation of cult. All religions feel like a massive pile of bullshit to me. I would rather figure things out myself. I have plenty of friends I get socializing from.

7. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person currently in the mormon church? (still alive)

Packer, Holland, Bednar, DC Peterson . . .

8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead)

Brigham Young, Joseph Smith, Nibley

9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church?

Blood atonement, Adam-God, plural marriage, eternal marriage, chasity, WOW, tithing -- as an atheist, all doctrine that is bullshit in general.

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years?

Of course, fewer. People are becoming more and more interested in truth and the access of information on the web is like a world-wide brain with trillions of snaptic connections. Truth will prevail. "The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off" -- Gloria Steinem. It's just beginning, and I imagine the whole cult could be shaken to its foundation and the only people left will be the foundamentalist of the group.

1. Do you identify yourself as an Exmo?
Yes. I still have yet to come out to family.

2. Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years?
Yes.

3. What was the main reason you became an Exmo? (choose the main one but can choose more if necessary)
a. History -- YES, this is the main reason. And I grew up knowing the dirty stuff!
b. Doctrine -- YES, this was second in line. Contradictions abound!
c. Current leaders (Bishop, SP, etc.) -- Not really
d. Sin -- No
e. Offended -- Sort of. I'm offended that I've been lied to all my life. Does that count?

4. Who/what has helped/supported you the most in becoming an Exmo?
My husband and my sister (thanks, sis, if you happen to see this thread)

5. Is the Mormon Church a cult? (yes or no and why)
Yes. It fits the criteria for a cult.

6. Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo? Why did you did you not join another church?
Nope, and never will. I couldn't look past the smoke and mirrors of Mormonism and not apply that to all other religions.

7. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person currently in the mormon church? (still alive)
Gee, I only get to pick one? I want to list all the GAs.

8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead)
Joseph Smith, but Brigham Young wasn't far behind.

9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church?
Doctrine that is still observed: tithing
Doctrine that was done away with: polygamy and blood atonement
Policy: whitewashing their history

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years?
Fewer. I hope.

1. Do you identify yourself as an Exmo? With pride.

2. Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years? Just at that threshold now.

3. What was the main reason you became an Exmo? (choose the main one but can choose more if necessary)

Really a&b (which kind of go together in a way), but a delicious helping of d, as well.

4. Who/what has helped/supported you the most in becoming an Exmo? My family and the people who knew I'd eventually just realize what a wackjob outfit this was stood by and waited patiently. And then when I was done, they were there--it was quite beautiful. Gave me real motivation to become the person I wanted to be instead of the one I was settling for. Reading other people's stories on here is a big help, too.

5. Is the Mormon Church a cult? YES, YES, YES. You cannot freely walk away. They take all your time, money, and encourage you to cut ties with people who aren't part of the fold. You advance by kissing the asses of living men more than revering a deity. It's not Scientology, but it's a pretty bad one.

6. Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo? Why did you did you not join another church? Nah. Wouldn't say I'm not a believer in anything, but I have a bad taste in my mouths towards churches and organized religion in general.

7. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person currently in the mormon church? (still alive) Boyd K. Packer... plus one sociopathic woman who is alive and kicking on the LDS' rolls today, rolling in and out of the temple with a valid recommend.

8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead) Brigham Young. Were he to have been leader of a nation, he would have been the American Joseph Stalin.

9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church? Basically the whole thing. Everything is pretty much canonized for the sole purpose of making people feel bigger than they are, and as stated above, it can all be taken away and one can lose their family, friends, everything they've ever worked for if they don't toe the line. The policies bother me way more than the doctrine. If people just believed it but in fact, the Church didn't seek to actively control people's lives, it wouldn't be one-tenth as bad.

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years? I would have to think fewer. The internet makes questions too easily answered--and there are so many questions in the mind of any adult LDS member.

1. Yes, but if I can avoid admitting I was ever one to begin with that is even better.

2. Yes. I have not attended in over 6 years.

3. None of the above. I never believed. I joined for my boyfriend/husband and played along. Thankfully he found out the truth on his own and is Exmo himself. 2lit1218 sounds like my husband...honey is that you?

4. My husband and I supported each other. I was thrilled when he told me he no longer believed. RFM has helped him tremendously. We both lurk here everyday.

5. Yes it is a cult. Fear and control are just a few of the reasons. It looks like a cult from the outside and proves to be one when you are in it. I loved to say no to callings, but it was embarrassing for my husband. When you don't feel guilty it is easy to say no.

6. I have not joined another church. Unfortunately Mormonism has made me doubt all religions.

7. Don't care.

8. JS and BY

9. Discrimination - women, homosexuals and others.

10. Fewer.

1. Do you identify yourself as an Exmo?
I consider myself a closeted exmo

2. Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years?
Yes, but a closeted one

3. What was the main reason you became an Exmo? (choose the main one but can choose more if necessary)
History
Doctrine
Sin (I don't consider it sin)

4. Who/what has helped/supported you the most in becoming an Exmo?
My older brother

5. Is the Mormon Church a cult?
Definitions of a cult provided by my computer dictionary:
a. a system of religious veneration and devotion directed
toward a particular figure (Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ,
General authorities) or object (BOM).
b. a relatively small group of people having religious
beliefs or practices (take your pick) regarded by others
as strange or sinister.
c. a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular
person or thing (again, GA, JC, and the BOM).

With fitting the basic description of what a cult is and adding the fact that they use fear, control, manipulation, and bold-faced lies to keep members active...most definitely a cult!

6. Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo? Why did you did you not join another church?
No! When I finally do leave for good I have no interest in religion. Thankfully I have been cured from being in this one.

7. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person currently in the mormon church? (still alive)
If I had to pick a GA then I'd probably say Holland, he's a bully! But I really think it's the members, especially parents via their kids, who perpetrate the lies of the General Authorities who are dangerous. Adults need to grow up and think for themselves. But I suppose they were brainwashed when they were kids as well...but when does the cycle end? I think it's very similar to physically abusive people who learn to be abusive from their parents...you can hardly use that as an excuse, right?

8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead)
Definitely Brigham Young! That guy was awful!

9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church?
Eternal Family. Believing that you can only live with your family if you're righteous enough in this life. That, I think, is what fuels people's fervent beliefs in the church. It's the emotional appeal that traps people. But it also is what ultimately hurts the members the most. When people leave the church it causes so much pain and anguish, and very unnecessarily! Would a loving god really do that? I'm currently seeing it with my own parents and family. It makes me feel bad for doing that to them, it's so stupid!

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years?
Unfortunately, yes. But, fortunately, there will probably be more inactive, ex-mormons as well. Maybe that doesn't make sense, but if you think about it, it does. More come in, more go out.

1. Do you identify yourself as an Exmo?
Indeed, hence the board name

2. Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years?
yes, well over 2 years

3. What was the main reason you became an Exmo? (choose the main one but can choose more if necessary)
a. History
first and then
b. Doctrine

4. Who/what has helped/supported you the most in becoming an Exmo?
Primarily, written info. Then, later, Online discussion, from a variety of internet sources

5. Is the Mormon Church a cult? (yes or no and why)
yes. it requires money in exchange for exaltation, and it also requires absolute obedience, even if the doctrine is wrong.

6. Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo? Why did you did you not join another church?
no.... I gradually became more agnostic, and now identify as agnostic atheist. The mormon chuch effectively removed any capacity for belief and made me more curious about learning the background of 'monotheism' in general [and it don't stand up to scrutiny]

7. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person currently in the mormon church? (still alive)
difficult question.... all of the top 15 (IMO) know it's a crock and so are all equally guilty of spreading lies.
BKP seems to be particularly nasty with his enduring homophobia

8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead)
Smith the Lecher

9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church?
Doctrine is very malleable and hard to pin down..... I would say the policy that a TR has to be paid for in cold hard cash [Tithing] with the knock on effect of people missing out on weddings or going into debt

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years?
fewer..... i believe the morg is seeing a massive downturn due to the availability of information... add to this the visibility and negative publicity of a mormon residential candidate [and possibly president].... people are really seeing the mormons are a weird bunch, despite their adverts

1. Do you identify yourself as an Exmo?
Yes, not that I introduce myself as such though.

2. Have you been an Exmo for more than 2 years?
No; about 1 year.

3. What was the main reason you became an Exmo? (choose the main one but can choose more if necessary)
History
(and Doctrine)
The history of the church shows that it is not divine as prophets have been deceived and doctrine has been changed, two things the church states can not happen.
I was also intimate with girls in relationships while inactive, and I will not and cannot regret those times, to do so feels wrong to the core of my being.

4. Who/what has helped/supported you the most in becoming an Exmo?
exmormon.org and the internet. I read a lot on the RFM forums and was able to verify enough arguments to a point where I was able to make the firm decision to leave.

5. Is the Mormon Church a cult? (yes or no and why)
Yes. They brainwash children from birth into an irrational believe system devoid of the ability to critically think for themselves or doubt/question without feeling guilt.

6. Have you joined another church since becoming an Exmo? Why did you did you not join another church?
No. The core of the Mormon church is the same as the core of most other organized religions. I am still actively spiritual, however.

7. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person currently in the mormon church? (still alive)
The parents of young children who propogate this atrocity.

8. Who is the most evil/bad/misguided person in mormon history? (that is now dead)
If Joseph Smith made it all up - him and his cronies. Every person who has feigned "knowledge" in this church while actually knowing it is false.

9. What is the most evil/bad/misguided doctrine or policy in the mormon church?
That men (people) in their natural state are evil and an enemy to God.

10. Will there be more or fewer active mormons in 5 years?
There will be more, or my faith in humanity has plunged even lower.

1. I struggle with that. I suppose I don't really. I self-identify as a skeptic or atheist first.

2. Somewhere between two and three, yes.

3. F. For me it was a lack of evidence more than anything.

4. I've had some good friends, and the boards have also been helpful.

5. That depends upon how you define cult. I'm inclined to say they're cult-ish, but not a full-blown cult.

6. Nope. I identify as an atheist. I don't think there's sufficient evidence for any religion I've seen so far.

7. I don't thing the terms 'evil' and 'bad' can really be applied to anyone I'm aware of in church leadership, but I certainly believe them all to be misguided. That said, I actually quite liked Gordon B. Hinkley. I've heard Elder Scott be quite rude.

8. I don't really think Brigham Young was a particularly great guy, but again, I wouldn't use the term 'evil' by any stretch.

9. There are a number of them, but I'd say those surrounding sexuality and critical thought are most damaging.

10. I think there will be more.

Yes

Doctrine (like the screwed up nature of the LDS god, obedience being the first law of heaven, curiosity and asking questions being sinful, etc.) played a small part and bad leaders helped nudge me out a bit, but mostly it was to save what mental health I had left. Decades of shame and guilt (even though I was a good Mormon) had beaten me down. I had to get away or continue the downward slide. Once outside the indoctrination dome, I realized I was actually an atheist.

Moving away from the church.

Yes, it's a cult of conformity and willful ignorance dressed up in feelings of superiority.

> 6. Have you joined another church since becoming

I toyed with Unitarian Universalism for a few months, mostly out of desire to expand my social circle, but I never really connected with anyone in the congregation. And it was still too much like church. Benign and dogma-free, but still church-like.

Monson

JS, because he got the whole sick ball rolling.

Unquestioning obedience.

Probably about the same percentage.

1. Yes, proudly.
2. No - resigned last November.
3. History & doctrine, but the power and control over peoples' lives played a big part too - the tithing requirements, forcing temple attendance through fear and intimidation, etc.
4. This board!!!
5. Yes, and ditto to Stray Mutt's answer above - couldn't agree more.
6. No way - not only have I not joined another church, I realized that I was basically an atheist all along. I will never have anything to do with ANY organized religion ever again.
7. Hard to say - Monson, Packer, most of the Big 15 and 70's, parents who know better, but continue to force their children to live the Mormon lifestyle
8. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young - evil beyond words
9. Obey or else - don't ask questions, don't rock the boat, don't lift the rocks and look at what's underneath, don't question the authorities, don't read "anti" material, and above all, never, EVER think for yourself.
10. Hopefully fewer, but as the world gets crazier and more complex I have to wonder if people will cling to their religion as a source of (misguided) comfort.

6. Returned to church of my childhood

7. BKP, Dallin Oakes, Bednar (the earring thing - ridiculous)

8. Brigham Young

9. Where to start...blood atonement, sanitizing history, changing doctrines, pressure of converts to get baptized before aware of complete doctrine, every member a janitor-as if members do not have enough to do in church and out of church

10.Fewer, let's hope!
