Those would be Brother Joseph and Brother Brigham respectfully, though I am sure a few others also partook.

I don't doubt they drank for a second. Is there any anecdotal evidence that shows they did?

There's plenty of evidence that the early church leaders including Joseph Smith did not obey the Word of Wisdom (even thought the WoW revelation was not technically a commandment) from the sources cited in the below link:

Even more puzzling is the ban on tea and coffee. Then again, most people in countries around the world drink at least one of these three (either alcohol, tea, or coffee). Not being able to drink any of these three is an anomaly, globally speaking. Even the Muslims can drink tea or coffee for crying out loud!

It's a little known fact that Brigham Young's ordering the Mount Meadows Massacre was the result of coffee jitters.

I believe the church prohibits anything that people may even become slightly addicted too. After all- if your spending money on coffee, alcohol or nicotine- that's money that you could be sending to the church.

all the $$$$$ spent on cigarettes, liquor, gambling, porn, etc.....

All that money could be put towards
MUCH better things for the lard, even Jeezus h. Christmas.
Like a 5$ bil mall & condos,
tommie-boys million $ bulletproof car,
private hunting reserves,
and a bottomless slush fund to prop up Mittler.
Come on guys, think of all the starving American lds children.!!
Send in all of your $$$$ folks!
It's the lards, even Jeezus's money anyway......

A jack mormon co-worker of mine, who refuses to see just how evil the church is, her clever response to anything I say is, well you get that with any religion...sorry, went off topic for a moment cuz it/she bugs me soooo much, anyway, she told me that tobacco was banned because of Emma. She made JS banit because people would smoke and chew (tobacco) in curch and spit and throw their butts on the floor and she was tired of cleaning it up.

This is complete BULLSHIT of course...according to the book I'm reading, Wife number 19, people were smoking, drinking, and enjoying coffee and tea well after the "saints" came to Utah.

Sometimes this co-worker spews bullshit to make herself sound smart when really she is a dumb ass...

Actually that is the official BS story line, and there is probably some truth to it. The WoW is actually plagiarized from an faddish early 19th century health pamphlet, and it seems likely that Ema was using her frustration with cleaning the tobacco stains in order to nag Joseph Smith into adapting it as gospel. Since she probably had his balls in a vice over his sleeping around, he made it revelation to appease her, then traveled around town the following day, publicly drinking in order to send the message what he really thought about the rule.

This. Though in Emma's defense, she had a horrible, horrible life and any concession Horny Joe could make to her was too little, methinks.

Anyway, the Word of Wisdom was "inspired" by the Temperance Movement running through the area at the time. That said, Smith often partook of wine and other liquors and in fact, was even running a liquor store in Nauvoo for a while (though Emma made him turn it over to someone else).

I just finished reading "No Mans Knows my History" so this stuff is fresh on my mind :)

from the "Church".

Thou shat not spend any money on alcohol, tobacco, tea or coffee! Those funds shall be sacrificed to our cause and be better spent by our inspired leaders.

Translation, we'll spend your money for you--stupid.

"I believe the church prohibits anything that people may even become slightly addicted too. "

Then why don't they ban sex altogether? Some people feel they can't live without sex.

At the Newel K Whitney store there is a room upstairs called "the room of the prophets'.

It's a little tiny (10X15?) room with wooden floors where the guys used to hold their meetings.

The men were spitting on the floor (disgusting) and leaving it for emma to clean up. I imagine it was slimy and gross. No running water, so she had to haul water up those little skinny steps. In the summertime it would be unbearable up there. Add heat and humidity to the smell and the slime. There are several windows in that room. You would think they could have spit out of the windows at the very least. And she did all this cleaning in a long skirt.
