This is an update regarding my nephew who acquired amebic dysentery followed by Dengue fever on his mission requiring hospitalization and was told not to tell his parents. He is coming home to recover in a six month time frame (my God, they throw this figure around as if it were a couple of weeks). After that he will be reassigned to a Spanish speaking US mission.

And still...there has been absolutely no direct contact between church authorities and his parents. This info all comes from my nephew via email. We're not exactly sure even what day he's coming back.

Sounds like an excellent time to look up and share other stories like his with him and your in-laws.

Good news indeed, P of F.Well the coming home part anyway. As for the rest of it, lack of communication, mere 6 months to recover, typical I guess.

As you may have gathered from my previous posting on your other thread, this particular subject turns this normally peaceful calm person into the Hulk.

Talked to my son about your nephew's situation this weekend. He told me about another missionary from the Caribbean mission who came back to the UK with serious malnourishment, which needed medical care, an infestation of parasites and such bad dental problems that again he needed specialist care. My son told me that when he himself saw a dentist while out there he was told off by the MP.

To any TBM lurkers, TSCC doesn't give a damn about your sons and daughters while they are on their missions. They just care about the bottom dollar. Who is looking out for your missionary sons and daughters? Well it should be the missionary, and you. Seriously.

I served in the Caribbean....West Indies Mission 83-85. I was on the english speaking islands. Suffered with stomach problems and the runs the entire time I was there, came home with lots af bacteria, devloped bleeding ulcers, was hospitalized, and continued to have severe and chronic bouts of stomach aches and diarreah (sp?) for about 10 years.

That has now passed (pun intended) and I seem back to normal as far as having stomach issues.

Dengue fever

Good description of it in "The Testament" by John Grisom.

It practically can put you in a coma, you can have hallucinations/delirium from the fever...

It takes a very long time to recover. The TSCC should be sued for any missionary getting it!

They are responsible for the health of those kids...but maybe that's why they only take them after they are of legal age.. Do the mishies sign a waiver?

I'd like to know, what can a missionary do whose health has been cracked by the TSCC?

Well I know what happens if a missionary whose health has been wrecked by their mission, has a wife, then TBM, who writes a genuine, questioning letter to Monson. This letter, not the least contentious, asks why her husband went through what he did on his mission and why the missionaries are treated so badly.

What happens is, they receive a letter from the Church's highest up lawyer, full of lies and threats and they also receive a visit from their bishop and stake president saying, basically, 'WTF were you thinking, writing to Monson????'

Neither my son nor his wife are any longer TBMs so that is one good thing that came out of it all.

...along with all its mission hyping bullsh!t, the church were to include a big disclaimer that they don't really give a rat's @ss about your health or safety. Imagine if homecoming talks included tales of church negligence. Gee, why didn't I tell about how I was (mis)treated when I was knocked down with infectious hepatitis and how the MP lied to my parents, then lied to me about lying to my parents?

Thanks for the comments of support. We got confirmation he's coming home tomorrow. Unfortunately, my sister-in-law and her husband are still standing their ground in their support of TSCC. I suppose it is possible that after they hear him tell them what happened first hand that they could change their minds. We'll see.

For now, I'm just glad he'll have time to recover. What's really sick about this is that the church authorities take on some sort of perverted, vicarious pride when these things happen. All the missionary gets is suffering.

Everyone posting on this thread should read Raptor Jesus book "The Passion of Rapture Jesus" which describes the health ordeal he went through and the abuse he took because he needed medical help. He ended up with a lifelong disability due to neglect and PTSD due to the psychological pressure and cruelty.

He's a funny writer, but his is a story of deliberate and calculated abuse. Let's call it what it is. ABUSE.

It's one of the many things we learn on RFM. First you have to name something before you can fight it. It's Missionary Abuse and it is closeted and hidden as well as the sexual abuse at Penn State was.

And I hope it reaches the same conclusion--and the removal of the statue of Joseph Smith, the original missionary abuser.

TBM's are so afraid to speak up and voice their opinion with church authorities. They're afraid of tragic consequences like losing their TR (I couldn't imagine anything worse than that). As a missionary, I knew we had no rights. We were no longer individuals and any problems we had we were just supposed to fix. Sick missionaries are told what they have to do. The decisions regarding a missionary's health are to be made by mission and stake presidents, that's it. Oh, and if a missionary gets sick, it's because he wasn't obedient enough, or it was a test of faith. Nothing is ever left to chance with them. I say BS. Sh!t happens.
