Story going viral, approaching epidemic!

Way to go, Brother Twede!!

Here's one interesting blog:

Jonathan Turley argues that the church has a right to control its members. Brings a new twist to the story.

Thanks for the link. I like this:

"I am a bit surprised by the allegations which raise very troubling questions, including the alleged role of academics at BYU who should be supportive of free speech values."

"I have always found the LDS community to be very open to dialogue and discussion on controversial issues"

He needs to learn more about Mormonism, particularly things well illustrated by the present controversy.

"though some churches are more tolerant of such discussions than others."

And Mormonism is among the least tolerant. And that is an important point to make during Mitt's Mormon Moment.

MeThinks that Lots of LDS people either

a) Don't Notice

or

b) Don't Mind the ways that the LDS church & culture manipulate them; Many actually PREFER a highly-structured life.

Churches are legally just like individual members in that associations are Strictly Voluntary; they can be started & terminated at will by either party.

The tools/strategies that LDS uses to attract & keep members is the issue here.

If the Catholic church attempted to apply church discipline to members who engaged in premarital sex, cheated on their spouses, publicly disagreed with the church, etc., the church would hardly have any members at all.

I think that most mainstream Christians would take a dim view of a church that excommunicates so freely. It would strike them as being an unChristian act.

Wow. Turley's dismissive attitude about a bunch of men pulling David into a room and interrogating him about his associates is truly astonishing.

It's unfortunate that the articles so far, this one included, all seem mischaracterize MT as simply a forum for "debate" about church doctrine, rather than saying that it's a well referenced library of facts about church history (including its politics) from documented sources, and that that is what makes it so dangerous in the eyes of TSCC.
