Thank you for that thread, baura.

Those are put-downs. They are designed to be deeply hurtful and insulting without appearing so.

Phrases like that were so off the wall weird to me that they stopped all brain function in me during the first years after I left the Mormon church (early 1980s).

Even though I recognized the pattern of disrespect for the convictions of others that they betray, it still took me a very long time before I could formulate any kind of appropriate response.
