It just dawned on me that a lot of the native groups to the north of me, in Western Canada and up through Alaska, do not have dark skin at all.

In fact, you could mistake some of these folks for Europeans, based on their skin tone. I knew a woman who is half Alaskan native and half Tulalip (I think--that's a Washington/Puget Sound tribe).

I guess the Mormon apologist would chalk it up to other groups that came over (for which there are also zero evidence), or interbreeding, or any number of other excuses, up to and including migration from Asia. Which, even if BoM migrations were to be believed, Mormons would have a hard time disputing.

I guess my thought isn't as interesting as I thought, but interesting to consider.

I am from the pnw, and all the native Americans I have run across look like native Americans. I have spent a fair amount of time at there casinos and went to high school with a number of them...

There are five haplogroups of mtDNA (mitochondrial) and two y-Chromosome ones (passed on from father to son; mtDNA is inherited from our mothers). They are all closely related to Asian tribes found in Siberia among the Altai near Lake Baikal.

With autosomal DNA (found in the nucleus), European admixture would be easily detected, and because of the "gene migration" (where lengths of DNA are "swapped" in paired chromosomes), it's a simple matter for scientists to determine "pre" versus "post" 1492 genetic contributions (there are none of the former). SNP's (single nucleotide polymorphisms) occur that allow the "length" of the DNA "ladder" to be determined. Those lengths would've been appreciably shorter if an individuals ancestors had arrived in 600 B.C. rather than in, say, the 18th or 19th Century.

Information on this matter has been published by the Sorenson Molecular Institute, incidentally, which is wholly subsidized and owned by Mormons. You can bet if anything had been found they would've been trumpeting that news loudly.

Thanks. I was actually thinking along the lines of "explain that one, Mormons!" until I realized that their beliefs would easily have an 'explanation' for it.

I've 'heard' but haven't read or studied up on the topic that there is a tribe of white indians in either central or south America.

Rumor has it that these are some righteous lamanites that escaped the wrath of all the wars because of their righteousness.

Does anyone know anything about that?
