THE TSCC/MORG, Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical, Jewish, Muslim, Etc., Etc., Etc..

I watched "Religulous" last night.

After learning truth about the church, I very strongly felt that if the TSCC is not true, and not what it claims to be, no organized religion is.

I feel even stronger about this point after watching this doc-film. The puzzle is really coming together.

I also realized that Mormonism is absolutely no different. Every religion has the same basic story. It's all MAN-MADE!!!

A lot of other religions are even crazier than we are....... BAT SHIT CRAZY!

Thoughts?

Of course it is. You should read "The Evolution of God" by Robert Wright. I read it shortly after breaking with TSCC, and found it enlightening. Since leaving TSCC I've also renewed my childhood fascination with ancient mythology. It's all just stories.

I like Bill Maher. Making fun of them might seem counterproductive but anti religious comedy actually has helped me on my journey away from silly theism. He's more than a comedian, of course, but some other stand-up guys who poke fun at religion I like are:

Bill Burr
Louis CK
Eddie Izzard
George Carlin
Patton Oswalt
Ricky Gervais
Doug Stanhope
Jim Jeffries.

Have you seen this clip of Gervais explaining the Noah's Ark story? Gold.

Bill Burr (anti-authority bit)
"Believes in a higher power," but I love his approach to religious authority!

swears a bunch

Bill Maher, me likey! Ironic, as an atheist he acts more 'christian' than many Christians I know.

Lately he's been setting off my gaydar a little. Anyone else think he might be Bi?

I think he is.... Good for him!

It feels good to not care about a persons sexual preference anymore.

Bill Maher is hilarious!

You might also like this clip from 'Letting Go of God' by Julia Sweeney. This bit is specifically about mormonism.

Be not afraid. While what you have is contagious, it is not deadly and no meds will be required to cure you because you actually want what you are afflicted with.

a) you have found your sense of humor

Even when I do not agree with Maher, he makes me laugh, hard.

b) you have found free hard drive space in your brain to evaluate things in a new way

Not going to church for 4 hrs every Sunday, or having to work so hard to twist the facts to fit what you've been told to believe, helps with that.

I would have vomited on my shoes if I watched Religulous when I was a TBM but once I had real doubts it became one of my favorite movies out there. I haven't had my eyes opened like that before. Can't wait to get my TBM wife to a place where she will even watch it.

Any man that funny is under no obligation to be correct. Yet he is right most of the time.

My boyfriend had me watch this last weekend. It is really awesome. One of my favorite parts is when he is outside the vatican talking to a priest and Bill brings up all these crazy things they believe and the priest keeps going, "pssht, that's ridiculous. Of course they teach that, but its so stupid and can't possibly be true" That made me laugh, I wondered why that guy is even a priest.

I used to think Bill Mayer was just this side of the devil. Now I have respect for the guy. Enjoy listening to him now. I've recently asked myself the same question: What The Hell IS HAPPENING TO ME?

Religulous came out shortly after I left the church in 2008, so I will always hold a soft psot in my heart for that documentary. I credit that movie with making me realize all religions are a hoax.

Sam Kinison was way ahead of his time on MORmONISM
as he attacked the TV evangelists.

Great thread. It's funny how many of you mentioned a couple of people/movies that I have recently discovered to be great myself. Bill Maher, Ricky Gervais, JUlia Sweeney ...
I also enjoyed this video of Jim Jeffries filled with swearwords http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TynFaEQj_Ys even though I used to cringe with every f-word he sais, I found watching it surprisingly liberating :)

Not a big fan of his although I agree with him on religion. His position on vaccines is idiotic and dangerous if people actually took his word and agreed with it.

Let's not forget the late, great, George Carlin.

"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death." [George Carlin]

BTW, George has been dead dunked a couple of times: http://famousdeadmormons.com/index.php?id=206

I do NOT undersand why George Carlin's family don't just sue!

Aren't there any people out there who are not Jews who are outraged that their beloved mother/father/sister/brother is being used as a ritual tool to suck unsuspecting teenagers into a cult?

Yes, there are plenty of us, anagrammy. But we are not sure what to do or how to do it that would not also bankrupt us. We hear those Mos are totes wily...

Class action suit?

I guess the difficult part is to demonstrate damage.

How does it hurt you if Grandma Lillian is baptized when she's gone and damage to her reputation cannot be shown to damage her--or you, other than emotional damage.

And how would you prove that?

Tad wiley is right.
