I have been reading Emerson and others, instead of the BOM, Ensign, and Mormon manuals. Emerson far exceeds any of these in wisdom and good thought-provoking advice.
Such a coincidence that you quote this--I'm reading Robert Richardson's biography of Emerson--The Mind on Fire. I'm only a hundred pages into it but have a lot of quotes marked already.
I find the following parallels interesting: Emerson was born in 1803 in Boston. His father was a minister. The son followed his father, but in 1831 he left the church and ministry.
My folks had a collected works of RWE on their bookshelf. When I was little, it was part of a fort made of books. Later, one summer when I was too bored to walk to the library, I started reading some of Emerson's essays. The one on self-reliance changed my outlook on a lot of things. (Unfortunately I squashed a lot of these ideals until later in life.) Anyway: "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string." The quote is from my teenage memory.
As I read about his life, I can't help but line up Waldo's thoughts and ideas against that of Joe Smith.
