I posted this hoping someone would share some optimistic factual news about the future again. I'm tired of all this gloom and doom from the mormon culture and family members. The world is going to end soon, yada yada yada.

Church leaders just spent BILLIONS of tithing dollars on a shopping mall.

Obviously, they are not planning on the world ending anytime soon.

2012 was more peaceful and provided a higher standard of living for more people than any other year in the history of the world

The world has challenges, sure but I see it becoming a better and better place.

Technology continues to advance and improve everyone's standard of living.

The world is getting to be a more tolerant, kind place. Minorities are treated better than ever. Slavery is closer to being eradicated than ever before.

Billions of dollars a year are voluntarily given to improve lives of complete strangers.

The people of the world are becoming more and more educated on average which will only serve to continue to improve life.

In a couple of days, the winter solstice will occur. Each day after that will get a little bit more daylight. As the days grow longer and warmer, spring will return and usher in a new season of life across the globe. Animals will give birth, crops will sprout and grow, providing food and materials to help man survive another year on this planet.

Now that is something to feel good about, celebrate, and be optimistic about:) Its factual, and the only true miracle of the season!

We seem to be having some growing pains as a species, but hopefully we can work it out. Don't be depressed. For every crappy story on the news, there are 100 good ones. The science/technology news articles always lighten my mood as it seems they are always focused on advancements to make life better and easier, or are just plain interesting. The world IS changing, and this scares conservatives, but for us that have an open mind and an open heart, we don't fear change as we know it is oftentimes needed.

That's how pitiful it is. One group is in a snit while the other is having a picnic. Remember that they have changed sides, and you'll put it in perspective.

My advice: Stop watching the news or watch it less :-) News is slanted toward our bias to worry. Our brain is wired to give more attention to the bad than to the good. This was adaptive for our ancestors; not so much for us. So, you have to deliberately pay attention to the good to compensate. Regularly making a gratitude list, among other things, has been shown to improve mood.
