Kaoru Ishikawa’s eyes filled with tears and spilled over. Wiping his cheeks, the Japanese ambassador to Canada thanked the anonymous person who had left flowers at the gates of the Japanese embassy. “It helps our morale”, he said. "We need that right now".

Yuko Cardon (Japanese exmo at RfM) wrote: "...I haven't been able to get hold of my family yet. I know they are out of water and electricity. That is all I know. Yes, I am anxious.”

I'm glad to hear more from Yuko, elsewhere on the board.

Stunning is the word - for the catastrophe and the artwork capturing the mood.

Still no words - every day it gets worse.

Saw a UEFA match between Manchester United and Marseilles today. Before the game started they had a minute of silence, with a sign flashing "With you Japan". It was touching in the extreme.

For those many of us who can't do anything personally, much as we may have the physical urge to help dig, and feed, and hug, all we can do is show that our thoughts and hearts are with the Japanese people in their extremity.

Here's hoping many more people are still found alive.

Tears, indeed.

It's hard to imagine they were once such virulent enemies. I lived in Misawa for three years, 1988-1991 and am still in love with the place and the people
