The Mormons like to impress each other by billing GC as a "global event". But when compared to various events such as Royal weddings and funerals, papal inaugurations, World Cup soccer, the Olympics -- events where viewership is in the billions or hundreds of millions-- GC comes and goes largely unnoticed.

There are only 5 million active Mormons on the planet. The vast majority of all media outlets throughout the world provide zero coverage.

So they set up a few webcams overseas and it becomes a global event?

I think your five million active members might be a little too high. It may have been that many during Mormonisms prime, but now its probably three to four million.

There are literally dozens of people huddled before a television screen in a tiny chapel in France where 6 adults and 18 unruly kids will be watching conference.

Since that scene is replicated across Europe, some of Asia and most of the Americas, that makes it "a Global Event".

Just like SL Airport was rebaptized "SL Intl Airport" when it got Canadian routes, it is technically correct if overly grandiose.

If we take into account all the pee breaks, I bet there isn't more than 100,000 watching at any given moment; thru out the Free World and the Not So Free World...
