I get the doctrinal basis of baptism for the dead. And the support claimed from the New Testament.
There were so many warnings and caveats about having to get married in this life, and many clear scriptures stating that you cannot marry after death. You can be married in life for eternity, but the dead CANT MARRY. In the early church, this seemed to have been accepted. You could baptise and save your dead. But not marry after death. So many people rushed to be sealed and endowed in Nauvoo before setting off for Utah.
So why posthumous temple sealings?
Are posthumous sealings another example of utah apostasy?
(Thoughts set off by the excellent thread detailing D&C 132 in plain language:
http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,869300 in which those who are not married - by Joseph Smith - in life are clearly designated as servants in the hereafter)
What is the scriptural/doctrinal basis for performing temple sealings for the dead?
