I have a Tesla coil that I built, and it works quite well. It's a dangerous little gadget, but lots of fun. His big contribution was alternating current. It can be stepped up in voltage easily for transmission and down again for use.
Some of his ideas are not practical yet, like transmitting power through the air. He also claimed later in life to be developing a death-ray.
The odd thing is that now they are going to high voltage DC for transmission because it's less lossy and because converting it back to lower voltage AC is now practical.
