I've often wondered about this subject. For example most historians agree that the United States would look a lot different today if the south won the civil war. Some believe it would look something like Eroupe. I realize that it takes a streach of the imagination but what if the western part of the U.S. became a different county altogether. So let's say Utah or the land of Zion became it's own country and it encompassed all of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Southern CA. The first leader of this country would of course be B.Y. My question is this do you think it would be a democarcy? Would it be a dictator ship? Would it be capitalistic? Would it be socialist? And how do you think women would be treated? Would there be freedom of speech? etc. etc. I think you get the idea. The reason I even bring this up is because here in Utah Mormons are always waving the flag and believe the constitution was inspired by God. However on closer inspection and given extreme right wing views of TBM's here in Utah the W.O.W. and the practice of polygamy along with heavy dress codes what would the Country of Zion look like and would it be a free county?

This is where my vote goes, at least culturally/politically. I think it'd be better off economically. But, given enough time, maybe not.

I think it would look like Hildale, UT / Colorado City, AZ. It would be a Theocracy and a controlled capitalism. I think that missions to other nations would have the aim of bringing saints to Zion in order to limit the in-breading. However, I think that proselyting would be limited to countries with predominately white populations. Without national pressure on racial civil rights, I think Zion would be whitesome, delightsome. The "prophet" would be the president. The citizens would be highly taxed (above and beyond the ten percent) because the prophet knows they'll pay it. And the national flag would have a big bowl of green jello in the middle.

Like Europe? lol! If the south won the civil war, blacks would definately become the majority. Eventually they would be emancipated, but we would suffer from diffuculty in adjusting from a slave economy. We would probably be like Detroit, but nationwide.

If the mormons countrolled the country and were the majority, we would probably be like Moaist China. The church has always been trying to be a government, and it has been trying to obtain as much industry as possible, and propaganda is its largest tool to gain power. Just like Moaist communists. It would probably be a cross between them and Saudi Arabia. Brigham Young was the biggest communist in American history.

1. Theocratic rule. Assigned leaders.
2. Education gets dropped even further down the ladder. In Utah public schools absolutley suck.
3. The cleansing would begin. In the past few years the church has stated that Brown v. Board of education was not and has not been good.
4. An all out attack on anyone who is not Mormon. This will clean up community's and help the world become even more white.
5. Science. Forget it. No need for the truth. The truth will be dictated.

I think it would be much like the FLDS communities. If it were its own Morg-run country, there would not have been any reason to get rid of divinely mandated polygamy, so that would go on just as in Brigham's day. I could see it resembling North Korea or Maoist China, with worshipping the Prophet/President as a God and tight state control over every aspect of life. The Danites would be the state-run police who make sure everyone toes the line. Women and children would be property with no rights, white male priesthood holders in the upper echelons of the Church would rule. Something like Shariah law would be the law of the land, and dissidents would be blood atoned.

North Korea, with a slight dash of Taliban-run Afghanistan. The state would control most aspects of daily life, and the laws would be dictated by the state religion. While the nation would probably be a fairly poor nation, major cities and tourist spots would be extremely lavish to project an image of wealth and stability - this would mean diverting funds away from smaller areas, where poverty would probably be the worst. With increased poverty comes increased government control to prevent any sort of rebellion. Major cities and "resort" areas would likely be showcase propaganda communities, where the most devout would be invited to live.

What an interesting idea. I think without federal oversight Brigham Young would have established a centrally controlled Theocracy. Based on the United Order implemented in Orderville, We can assume the church would have owned all the goods (capital) with people getting temporary 'stewardships'. Everyone’s time and talents (labor) would be consecrated to the church. Personal rights and freedoms would not be respected (JS and BY didn't show much respect for others when they disagreed with revealed word). This early version of central control would have failed miserably in the 19th century just like it did for the soviets and the Chinese in the 20th century.

by the early 1900's Deseret would have become too important as a trade route with the west coast and the Mormon leadership would have made such a mess of the place that Teddy Roosevelt would have called out the rough riders and liberated the place. Mormonism would have been vilified as an anti-American separatist movement and history would remember it as a failed utopian experiment,

In short given enough rope the church would have hung itself.

If Zion were a country, women would be forced to wear burkas and veils, and you would have the Mormon Taliban patrolling the borders.Gentiles would be starved out, run out, or killed.

Catholics would be burnt at the stake.
