After 40 years of being inactive I just submitted an email to the LDS church resigning (Using a sample on this site). There are many reasons why I'm taking action now, not the least of which is church minions seem to have discovered me recently. This has resulted in letters from the ward and now two strangers knocking on my door.

Wish me luck.

It's a sad commentary that you need to post "Wish me luck," but I understand, so Good luck!

But remember: You own you, they don't. You are an adult free to disassociate yourself from any group you wish to.

Soon, a letter from church HQ that says its an ecclesiastical matter and was forwarded to local priesthood authorities.
But what they dont mention is that in 60 days you get your follow through letter whether or not local priesthood does anything.
If local priesthood contacts you theres no obligation to do anything they say like meet with them or explain yourself. Even if you do nothing church HQ typically follows court precedent after all.

Thanks amos2. That's the kind of information I was hoping for.

They have no authority
- unless we give them authority.

You give them legally recognized authority to treat you as a member when you or your parent or guardian signed a baptismal certificate. Resigning terminates that authorization, in the eyes of the courts. Just walking away may terminate that authorization in your eyes, but not in the eyes of the law.

So yes, they only have the authority you gave them. But you gave them some authority when you got baptized, and they plan to hold you to it until age 110 unless you tell them otherwise by resigning.

Playing their little game is precisely how we grant them authority.

I mean - we know the cult wants money.
Why then am I not sued in a court of law for the very considerable tithes I "owe" since my escape.

As amos2 said, you have no obligation to meet with them, you have nothing to explain they are not your friends or family. If they show up at your door or call, respond with a firm, "I have no interest in meeting with you, please have my paperwork processed quickly and without delay."

Good Luck!
