...in the early to late 30's, Hitler adoration was no big deal. George Prescott Bush was convicted thru the Trading with The Enemies Act. Hollywood movie producers gained a foothold, Rockefellers shuffled money over there; everyone wanted a piece of the action; the "new, fresh, hip Germany". The American Bund. Things like eugenics fascinated people. The Autobahn. Germany held a high number of Nobel prize winners in science, physics, etc. Even Kennedy got sucked in....LDS Church;(racial purists, after all) were no different. Operation Paperclip. Bad decisions all around. Very bad.
