I'm not a believer but my parents make me go to church.

Last sunday in sunday school the teacher asked a girl something. The girl said: "I'm not allowed to participate".

Does anybody know if this is a common punishment?

If she has been disfellowshipped, she wouldn't be allowed to participate.

She was either disfellowshipped or put on probation, with a condition being that she not be allowed to participate in discussions.

Kind of like a poor man's "Scarlet A," don't you think? Public shaming.

Public shaming - disgusting for sure. Mormons are rude, unkind and downright mean. They are everything Jesus was not.

This. She's not even allowed to answer a question and has to tell everyone this? Good grief.

This is horrible...it truly is a Scarlet Letter shaming. Mormons have no concept of allowing people their dignity.

Terrible to treat someone like this and how do Mormons not see that this is cult behavior.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disciplinary_council

... A disfellowshipped member may not hold a temple recommend, serve in a church calling, or exercise the priesthood. [He/she] may attend public meetings of the LDS Church, but may not give a sermon, teach a lesson, offer a public prayer, partake of the sacrament, or vote in sustaining church officers. HOWEVER, DISFELLOWSHIPPED MEMBERS MAY PAY TITHING AND FAST OFFERINGS and continue to wear the temple garment. ...

What a blessing! At least they are allowed to pay tithing and fast offerings!

"MAY PAY"

my understanding is that there's nothing "may" about it - if they want to get back their full member status they've got to stay current on their tithing

Oh wow. That just totally brought me back. When my husband and I were engaged we were both on probation. We were not allowed to take the sacrament, which made us show up late after the sacrament was over. We were not allowed to say prayer, so we went to the ss class that was taught by a family member. Nevermind that all the people in the class were 3 years younger than us. One Sunday the family member was running late & the kids started class w/out them. My husband was called on for prayer & had to refuse. So, they called on his Fiancé. Well, I also had to refuse. We looked like a pair of dumbasses.

That is what is so fundamentally wrong with the church. They shame you so hard over rules that they make up in the first place. You already feel bad for breaking the "rules". Then you feel worse for being unworthy for not being able to say a damn prayer.

I went home & sobbed that day. Humiliated & felt lower than low. Wish I knew then what I know now.

the "discipline" is designed to make you feel worthless. Then
the Church rebuilds that worth based on THEM, not YOU. At that
point the own you since they built you.

That's why when any "sexual sin" is confessed the Bishop, SP,
Court of love, asks for every single detail. Part of it might
be them getting their jollies, but the justification is that
they need to shame the hell out of you and make you feel one
inch tall.

disfellowshipped would mean to me= bye bye fuckwads! I cannot believe people put up with this stuff. She actually showed up to church again? *facepalm*

I agree, as it would mean the same thing for me. If that happened before I married my TBM ex-husband, then it would have saved me the hassle of filing for divorce.

I thought disfellowshipped members could participate and answer questions. Just not say prayers, give talks, teach, etc.

Then again Bishops these days keep getting wilder and wilder...

There was a guy in my ward who has been excommunicated, but he still comes to church every Sunday, and he probably answers the most questions out of anybody in Sunday School lol.

If someone is disfellowshiped, that person is still a member, and must follow the rules of the hierarchy above him/her. If someone is excommunicated, that person is a free agent, and can do whatever he/she damn well pleases.
