I think gold plates is a lot more believable (for people of any age tbh).

I don't think it makes a difference. If I was taught the rock-in-hat history from birth, it would have seemed just as believable as gold plates. Children are like sponges and most are hardwired to trust their parents. It's the parents' responsibility not to abuse that trust.
