If there was no Great Apostasy, then no need for a Restoration.
Protestants, who had Bibles based upon the Latin Vulgate, would quote Peter writing: "the Day of the Lord shall not come lest there be a falling away first". They used this verse to convince others that the Church (i.e. Roman Catholic Church) had "fallen away".
They were wrong.
Mormon missionaries use it to show how all of Christendom has fallen away. They are wrong.
In the original Greek it says "apostasia" which means, in Greek, NOT "falling away" (as it does in Latin), but rather "rebellion". Peter was saying that the "Day of the Lord", which refers to the events the Lord described in Matthew Chapter 24 (NOT to His second coming), would not come until the "apostasia" (rebellion) came first. Indeed, this happened. The "rebellion" of the Jews against Roman occupation came in 67 A.D. to 70 A.D., when the Temple and Jerusalem were destroyed, and the Jewish rebels defeated by Roman armies. This is what Jesus was referring to when he said to look for the Eagles (Roman Standards) gathering, and then the Sun would be darkened, the Moon turn to blood, and the stars falling. When Jerusalem was set on fire, the Sun was darkened, and the smoke in the air made the Moon appear blood read, and the Roman catapults sent fire-laden tar balls upon the city (stars falling from heaven). THAT is the "Great Apostasy" that occurred over 42 months/3 and 1/2 years.
Another common MIStranslation in Mormon scripture is the phrase "Only Begotten". This is a MIStranlation of the Greek word MONOGENES (Only Kind or "Unique"). St. Jerome thought it means "Only Begotten". The Greek words for Only Begotten would be MONO GENAO, and these words DO NOT APPEAR anywhere in the Greek New Testament. In other words, St. Jerome BLEW IT! The phrase "Only Begotten" appears numerous times throughout the Book of Mormon, and in the D&C and also the Book of Moses! All based upon a 4th century MIStranslation. All more evidence that the Church is NOT what it claims to be.
