I do think that some, and I say some, Arizona Mormons are more fanatical than the Utah variety. My mom is from Snowflake. We were raised to pretty much regard anything the Brethren said as nothing more than the word of God. Since the Brethren didn't encourage drinking Coke or Pepsi, we never drank it. (In an act of 12 year-old rebellion, I would drink it while the parents weren't looking.) Despite growing up in Arizona, where it was 100 degrees in the shade, we were not allowed to wear shorts, because our mom thought it would be easier for us when we had to wear the garmies. I bought my own when I was in high school and started wearing them as an act of teenage rebellion. I wasn't much of a rebel, in that my acts of rebellion consisted of wearing shorts and drinking Coke.
My dad's family, which is from Salt Lake City, always seemed more tolerant and sane to me. My grandparents drank Coke with caffeine in it (the sinners!). They also seemed much less fanatical in their approach to religion.
AZ Republic pointed out that there was a Mormon cabal in the AZ legislature several years back. All committee chairs were a particular brand of Mormon; the kind that take Cleon Skousen seminars, and put it on their resumes.
Edit: I think a few of the chairs might not have been Mormon but they still took the seminars.

This statement gave me a good laugh to start my day. Hello John Birchers! Enough said!
