Living in the Wacky World required as much flexibility as being a contortionist!

Notice the difference between wards/Bps when a new one is installed;

Notice the difference in the presentation of Mormonism between GBH & TSM; night/day, I'd say.

Mormons process this by saying (like):

Well, under GBH, the church needed (X);

TSM sees that the church (people, mind you) needs (Y).

the changes in the prophet ( a mere conduit for god's will) make my head spin!

yeah, I could understand it on the ward level, changes are sometimes necessary (partly because of the wild swings allowed), but 'for the whole church'? Really???

I wonder why the church really needs so many senile prophets. I think its so that other people can run the church without interference. These days, it's probably Oaks, Nelson, and Eyring. Holland is obviously in the doghouse and trying to work his way out.

I know white haired TBMs who insist the church hasn't changed in their lifetime. They see no inconsistency. That's how they process it.

Some of them, as Stray Mutt indicated, process it by denying any inconsistency. Others, like my father, process it by selecting from the vast array of choices for belief. My father enjoys the inconsistency, because he gets to look down on the silly people who believe JFS, McConkie, Benson, etc. But he also gets to hate the people who disagree with some obscure private quotation from his favorite apostles.

It's a narcissist's dream.
