A few months ago, I was reading a book by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. It was a very enjoyable book, but I was especially delighted when they wrote about doing an ad for Coffee Achievers, which was a PR campaign for coffee farmers. I remembered the ad because I grew up in the 80s and it was a very bizarre spot that aired frequently. Ann and Nancy were supposedly embarrassed by it, but they did get paid about $1,000,000 for their work.

The lady who does the voiceover on this sounds like part phone sex operator, part pusher.

I love these kinds of weird ads from the past and am always combing YouTube looking for them. Too bad all we have nowadays is ads for Lifestyle Lift and Jillian Michaels' exercise machines.

My sister's TBM friend wrote a jingle for Kent cigarettes, and made enough money to buy a fancy house. She became RS president, and didn't have any guilt feelings. No more than TSCC who has sold sugar to Anhauser Busch and Coca-cola (is this still against the WOW?) for many generations.

Wow! That's pretty crazy!

I guess it's okay for them to peddle sin to the Gentiles if it makes them a buck.

Didn't BY own/run a distillery in SLC?

and remember, his 'personal' finances were nearly 100% inter-mingled with the Corps.

Someone should write about BY's finances (including the rumor that he charged for issuing divorce decrees).

All the Mormon barley farmers I knew sold the whole crop to beer brewers year after year. No guilt.

I have some sympathy here, lots of industries have at least some customers who violate the word of wisdom, work on sunday, whatever. As someone who sold cigarettes to customers who asked for them (it was part of the job) and shipped pallets of alchohol to customers who wanted it (again part of the job), I didn't lose any sleep over it. It's definitely a gray area, but I think LDS Inc allows casino workers to get temple recommends nowadays.

Probably doesn't allow strippers to, but hey, the way things are going, maybe someday. So long as you put your garments back on when you're done....

I live in Las Vegas. Many TBM's work in casinos. It is not considered a problem here.

Yeah, I'm guessing the paycheck must have been high for Kurt Vonnegut to do this ad.

The Mormons practically helped build Las Vegas.

When no other banks in the US would accept casino money, Salt Lake did.

A Salt Lake area bank financed flight training for one or more of the 9-11 airplane mass murderers who flew the planes into the buildings in New York City

Why?

Ann and Nancy Wilson were not Mormons....I think that is just one of those Mormon legends

I know they aren't Mormons. I was just wondering what Mormons in the 80s thought of the Coffee Achievers ad, since coffee is sort of being pushed as if it's some kind of wonder drug.

I only brought up Ann and Nancy Wilson because their book reminded me of that ad and how it used to be on TV all the time. They wrote that the ad was embarrassing and they only did it for the money.

A somewhat non-traditional and offbeat fellow missionary in my mission who had been a roadie for Heart claimed to have banged Ann Wilson, and knowing him, I believe it.

I don't recall the commercial... but I was pretty busy with life and traveling in those days. But, I'm a (still) a big fan of Jeff Lynne and ELO.

And, I'm enjoying a cup of coffee right now, thank you!

At Starbucks (or its ilk) that amount of coffee would just be the base of the drink before they put everything else into it.

No one uses those little mugs any more do they? :-)
