I'd like to hear your thoughts on this:

I think it's because now the church won't have to fear performing gay marriages in the chapels. How convenient to announce this, when gay marriage in all 50 states is now inevitable.

They are denying any change:

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogsfaithblog/58542650-180/temple-lds-mormon-marriage.html.csp

"Church leaders are well aware of the issues surrounding marriage and continue to examine them carefully," LDS Church spokesman Dale Jones said Monday in a statement, "but we are unaware of any meetings where changes to temple marriage policies have been discussed."

How many Mormons does it take to change a light bulb? One to make the change, one to explain away the change, and one to deny any change has actually happened.

Typical of mormons.

There are no laws on the books that state a church must marry a gay couple.

My take on this is that by doing away with civil marriages, they can almost force people to become temple worthy (by paying and obeying) or get married outside the faith and lose all credibility in their families and communities.

You know, 'cuz the plan of Lucifer was to force people back to heaven and he gets all the glory.

There has been speculation that those who won't marry gay couples may have their right to marry in general taken away.

I doubt it's true, since there are churches that refuse to perform interracial marriages still with no repercussions.

Still, if it WERE true, a preemptive step to move away from civil marriages would make it look like THEY took the move, instead of had it forced upon them.

...gay marriage will be the cause of so many Mormon couples not having to choose between hurting the feelings of their loved ones and the requirements of the Church.

For Mormons, Gay marriage will help traditionalize Mormon marriage. And that's a step in a good direction.

This is the way it should have always been. Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's (the civil law part of marriage) and unto God what the church claims is God's (the religious hoo-ha of "solemnization").
