There'll Be Some Changes Made
By The Boswell Sisters...from the 1930's

Did you have a "happy song" when YOU finally left?

Change in the weather
Change in the sea
From now on, there'll be a change in me
My walk will be different
My talk and my name
Nothin' about me is gonna be the same

I'm gonna change my way of livin'
If that ain't enough
(Then) I'll change my way that I strut my stuff
Nobody wants you when you're old and gray
There'll be some changes made today
There'll be some changes made

"Wind Up" by Jethro Tull

Well you can excommunicate me on my way to Sunday school
And have all the bishops harmonize these lines
How do you dare to tell me that I'm my father's son
When that was just an accident of birth?

...In your pomp and all your glory, you're a poorer man than me
As you lick the boots of death born out of fear
I don't believe you
You had the whole damn thing all wrong
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sunday

here's the lyrics:

Hey, hey, give 'em what they want

If lust and hate is the candy
If blood and love tastes so sweet
Then we give 'em what they want

Hey, hey, give 'em what they want

So their eyes are growing hazy
'Cause they wanna turn it on
So their minds are soft and lazy, well

Hey, hey, give 'em what they want

If lust and hate is the candy
If blood and love tastes so sweet
Then we give 'em what they want

So their eyes are growing hazy
'Cause they wanna turn it on
So their minds are soft and lazy
Well who do, who do, who do you wanna blame?

Hey, hey, give 'em what they want

If lust and hate is the candy
If blood and love tastes so sweet
Then we give 'em what they want

So their eyes are growing hazy
'Cause they wanna turn it on
So their minds are soft and lazy
Well who do, who do you wanna blame?

Independence Day - Martina McBride

Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay it's Independence Day

So for so long after leaving the cult, "I Can See Clearly Now" would run through my brain:

"our song" was "Only the Good Die Young" of course by Billy Joel. I'd say that was my leaving the cult song.

Now, watch what you say,
Or they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal,
Oh, a fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name,
We'd like to feel you're acceptable,
Respectable, oh presentable,
A vegetable.

("Logical Song" by Supertramp)

I heard this on my mission in France listening to "forbidden" radio at night with headphones. It sparked a recognition in me that making me an acceptable vegetable was what the church was doing to me. And I didn't like it.
I got home from my mission 3 months later, and left within a few more months.

MY leavin the puppy mill song was "Already Gone" by the Eagles. When mom was drivin me and Ruby The Diva Dachshund home, to our Forever Home, Ruby was lying snuggled with blankies in a basket just quietly looking around and diggin the moment...

Me, I was nuts, bouncing all over the car. It was scary. Life inside the small cage in the puppy mill was all I'd ever known. Mom kept up this talkingtalkingtalking to us. She also had the radio on and that song come on... and she sang along.

Only thing scarier than a puppy mill is mom's singing.

Another One Bites the Dust is what I like to sing every time I hear another person left the CULT. (only I mean it in a nice way)

Lament, by Ultravox

And just as my eyes start seeing
After all the pain
The twist in my life starts healing
Just to twist again

In stillness, in sorrow
Returns that softly sighing lament

Lament

And just as the smile's returning
After all the pain
The fire inside stops burning
Just to burn again

In moments of madness
Returns that softly sighing lament

Just so you know, I wasn't lamenting the end of my relationship with a cult. I was deeply, deeply disturbed and saddened at the years and energy I had given it; how I dedicated my life to it, gave my children to it, and was ego-less within it. I learned things about myself when I left that I'm sorry I had to learn, though it was necessary and ultimately positive and productive.

Walk Unafraid by R.E.M.

I was brought into this life
A little lamb, a little lamb
Courageous, stumbling
Fearless was my middle name

But somewhere there I lost my way
Everyone walks the same
Expecting me to step
The narrow path they've laid, they claim to

Walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
Hold my love me or leave me high

Say, "Keep within the boundaries
If you want to play"
Say, "Contradiction only
Makes it harder"

How can I be
What I want to be?
When all I want to do is strip away
These stilled constraints

And crush this charade
Shred this sad masquerade
I don't need no persuading
I'll trip, fall, pick myself up and

Walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
Hold my love me or leave me high

Leper Messiah from Metallica

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm71Khu5-Lk

Lyrics

Spineless from the start, sucked into the part
Circus comes to town, you play the lead clown
Please, please
Spreading his disease, living by his story
Knees, knees
Falling to your knees, suffer for his glory
You will

Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
And you'll get a better seat
Bow to Leper Messiah

Marvel at his tricks, need you Sunday fix
Blind devotion came, rotting your brain
Chain, chain
Join to endless chain, taken by his glamour
Fame, fame
Infection is the game, stinking drunk with power
We see

Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
And you'll get a better seat
Bow to Leper Messiah

Witchery, weakening
Sees the sheep are gathering
Set the trap, hypnotize
Now you follow

Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
And you'll get a better seat
Lie, lie, lie...

Fall Out Boy - Saturday

"I read about the afterlife, but I never really lived."

I sprinted through the gates when I left Mormonism and have more than made up for the lost time. It feels good.

And I keep finding new ones to relate to the experience.

However, at the time I was questioning, Madonna's "Survival" and "Human Nature" really spoke to me.

"
I'll never be an angel
I'll never be a saint it's true
I'm too busy surviving
Whether it's heaven or hell
I'm gonna be living to tell, so
Here's my story (my story)
No risk no glory (no glory)
A little"

"You wouldn't let me say the words I longed to say
You didn't want to see life through my eyes
(Express yourself, don't repress yourself)
You tried to shove me back inside your narrow room
And silence me with bitterness and lies
(Express yourself, don't repress yourself)"
