Now that I've discovered Hyrum was the final "Prophet" of the church in Nauvoo and Joe obviously felt like it was his "birthright" to have that position, then when Joe and Hyrum died, the naturally it would have gone to Samuel who happened to find himself dead by poisoning.

I think it was more than that. He wanted to be king of a world government that would absorb all other governments, including the United States. The stone cut out without hands.

The business about the elders saving the Constitution was a later innovation by Brigham Young. Joseph Smith would claim the protection of the Constitution while working against it.
